Ausable Chasm Rainbow Falls

Since 1870, Ausable Chasm has thrilled and amazed all who have come to explore. More than 10 million visitors have witnessed what mother nature has provided. Rainbow falls! It is called by some the "Little Grand Canyon of the East" and is fed by the Rainbow Falls at its southern extreme.
Carved by the Ausable River, rising in the Adirondack Mountains and winding its way northeast to Lake Champlain, this extraordinary Chasm is one of the most unique scenic spots in the entire Champlain Valley. Once a part of the floor of an ancient sea, which marked the northern and eastern boundaries of the Adirondack Mountains, the Chasm, at the dawn of the world, was made up of layer upon layer of mud, sand and ooze that eventually became Potsdam Sandstone.
3.2 km (2 mi) long, from 6 to 15 m (20 to 50 ft) wide and from 30-61 m (100 to 200 ft) deep the canyon is dominated by the mighty 500 million year old Potsdam sandstone cliffs. The prehistoric Ausable River, plunging 50 torturous miles from its headwaters at Mount Marcy began its masterpiece during the Cambrian age. Finding a fault in the bedrock, it continued for countless centuries, carving downward through this original fault. Today, the work of the river continues, cutting deeper and deeper into the sandstone bedrock. The gorge is perhaps more awe-inspiring in our times then when Samuel de Champlain first explored the Champlain Valley over 400 years ago

Night tours are led strictly using lanterns, hearing the rushing waters 100 feet below, only seeing each other, and the shadows cast by the lantern lights on the canyon walls, the effect is spooky and exhilarating.

Belle prise,

Hi Dot

A good downward pov, on the imposing waterfalls. Wonderful pov, with good sharpness & pastel colours. The fg house at right adds depth. Tfs!

Hi Dot,

This is one of those picture you look at, then want to type a critique, then have to look again - it's amazing. What the force of water can do, yes I can imagine what that must be like with only the light of lanterns at night.

Ps En cette période de migration, les oiseaux occupent presque tout mon temps, ce qui m'oblige à délaisser Treklens un tant soit peu.

Hello Dot,
Magnificent shot of the great waterfalls. Excellent composition with beautiful details of the flowing river. I like this one very much. Awesome!

Best regards,
Sharina

Marvelous view, very romantic setting! It reminds me of Bad Gastein in Austria, a very romantic place also.

hi Dot,
what an impressive image, this misty fall so near to the houses, this is really a beautiful picture, brava
kind regards

Tell you what Dot, if this chasm is anywhere near your home, please come again over a period of time. There are 365 days in a year and there are 12 hours of daylight. One of those moments, you would get the effect of its namesake. In one of those moments, it would show itself the best that it could. There are places in this planet, eye candy itself to be babysit for as much as we could. You need to find that moment which would justify its beauty and exhilaration.

Regards
Rabani
