This lighthouse was taken at Alcatraz Island. The discovery of gold in California in 1848 brought thousands of ships to San Francisco Bay, creating an urgent need for a navigational lighthouse. In response, Alcatraz lighthouse #1 was erected and lit in the summer of 1853.

After 56 years of use, Alcatraz lighthouse #1 was torn down in 1909 to make way for the construction of Alcatraz prison. Alcatraz lighthouse #2 (shown in the photo) was located next to the cell house and completed on December 1, 1909. This 84-foot tower of concrete contained a smaller, fourth-order lens. In 1963, the fresnel lens of Alcatraz lighthouse #2 was replaced with an automated rotating beacon.

hi Renier,

Very good image. Beautiful shades and tones.

best regards

Excellent photo. The composition on this is really quite impressive. I'm always impressed by those who go the extra mile and get themselves into a spot that could be potentially dangerous for a shot! Shows initiative that many photographers don't have. Good work!

Hi Renier,

I think it is a good picture, but I don't like it. Don't really know what it is, because the lighthouse and the rubble is quite attractive and creates a dark mood, so it must have something to do with the sky..must be something personal from me then.

TFS
Els

PS I just have been working with your picture.
I copied it and used that copie to turn it into a negative with 33% opacity to paste over the original.
Then I pasted the negative under the original and partially cloned in the white sky. The top of the lighthouse remained black and at the left parts of the ruins stayed white for more contrast. I cropped away the negative picture and pasted your original underneath. Then I cloned back the ruin of the house and tree with 100% opacity and the rest less, sothat a bit more emphasis went to that house.
.
Working on your picture I really started to appreciate it!
Thanks
Els

A foreboding image Renier. WEll composed and the conversion process has created some lovely darker tones. Good clear detail with a nice light.
