22 Degree Halo

This shot was taken yesterday at 12:36. I had happened to look up at the sun to see this halo surrounding it. The halo itself appeared to be vaguely rainbow colored and inside the halo the sky was slightly darker. I had heard of such a phenomenon as being called a "sundog" before but had never seen one.
Regrettably I did not have my camera with me when I first sighted this and it had faded a little by the time I could get some pictures.
I did some research online and I found that this particular halo is not exactly a sundog. It is a sun halo with a 22 degree radius. It is caused by light refracting through ice crystals high in the atmosphere. Inside the halo the crystals cannot cannot reflect light so it appears darker.
This site I found has some interesting information about sun halos and other atmospheric phenomenon if anyone is interested.

I find this circle very interesting, I have never heard about that phenomenon. I am glad that you took this photo and shared it with us here.
