***I just found out this pic was shown on our ABC news affiliate during the weather segment! Whoo hoo!! This is the second time I made the cut!

A super cell storm formed over Houston last night, around 6:30PM the heavens opened and dumped tons of water on south and central Houston. Our water aerobics class was halted and so I jumped in the car and drove home though this deluge! I figured the rest of the evening was shot.

But when I got to my side of town in the north, it was dry as a bone! Literally HALF of Houston was wet, the other half dry! The sky was such a brilliant blue it hurt my eyes!

So I knew from experience that conditions were perfect here for photography. Unmoving super cell, clear skies to the north, sunset in the west, exploding mushroom cloud covering half the city! PERFECT!

So I grabbed my camera equipment and drove to the retention pond near my home and shot away. I almost talked myself out of it, because I was tired and I don't like being out by myself anymore! But there were other folks enjoying the place, so I felt safe enough. My wide angle lens could NOT even begin to capture the sight I saw there! This thing was huge! I would estimate at least 50 miles across.

I will post the other direction behind me and the edge of this thing in WS. The sun bouncing off this cloud made everything green and orange. The edge of this monster was directly over my head and the wind shooting out of it cooled us down from 96 degrees to about 80 in about an hour!

Hope you enjoy..and praying for rain now for our half of the city!
Linda

I love the way you have played with the light -- it makes it broody and heavy

Very nice capture of the dramatic size and power of a large Cb cloud ( Cumulonimbus ), that's a big cell over there....
Hope you get your rain.....

Hi Linda,

There is nothing like the Texas Sky!! I never realized the beauty of sky until I was in the flat plains of Texas. The same thing happened to me the other day. I was at the edge of rain and blue sky! Amazing beauty.

The repetitive patterns of the cloud are what really grab my attention on this. The color is absolutely stunning!

Hope you get your rain.... We have a pleaasant day of high of only 83 today! Yipee!

thanks for sharing, Lisa

Hi Linda

I like the subtle, undestated colors here which impart a more sombre mood than the previous upload. Wonderful reflections in the fg lake. Tfs!

All three pictures are so beautiful. You're so happy to get rain and I'm so glad it's finally stopped :) But I LOVE the clouds, and with this lighting they are rather breathtaking aren't they. Great job!! Have a good day!

HI Linda
The last time I saw something similar to this was when Charleton Heston did the parting of the sea.
Pretty awesome and somewhat scary cloud. You did a great job of snapping away. As for the rain please keep it in Texas as its all we have had for the past week with more to come next week

An impressive cloud structure Linda and well captured. Nice details in the clouds and just enough foreground interest.

Hi Linda,

The sky in your photo looks stunning and gives a very good perspective! Also the color tones are beautiful, and the frame as well.

Best regards,
Sorina

Hi Linda,

What a special clouds you have captured here!
Overall very dark, but it works for me in this composition. The river is still very well visible. Interesting note as well and an even more interesting workshop posting! I especially like 'the edge of the monster'. That is really a bit scary.

Hope you'll get a dry weekend ;-)

Greetings,
Dennis
