| There's not a whole lot to this photo and I'm not sure why it's always drawn me in. I've seen hundreds, if not thousands of roadside memorials in my life, but this one captivated me, perhaps due to it's simplicity. The metal cross, which was about 15 or 16 inches tall, was tied to a utility poll along the causeway across the salt marshes and wetlands leading on to Chincoteague Island. When I saw it, I wondered if someone had driven off the causeway and into the water. It certainly wouldn't be hard to do, as there is barely a shoulder and no guardrail. I always liked all the different shades of brown in this image, and the golden light from the early morning sun makes the cross stand out. |
