This is actually six photos placed side by side to create a panorame, which I hopefully will now able to post in a larger panoramic version. The original photos are several years old and from a scan on my computer. I sharpened and saturated a bit.

The last time this volcano in Mt. Lassen National Volcanic Park was in the 1600's, but when you hike up to this hole, except for the lack of gases rising up, you might think it was YESTERDAY.

This park is in northern California near Redding and is a fascinating place to see. You can take a strenuous hike to the top of TWO volcanos, this one call the Cinder Cone and Mt. Lassen itself which erupted on May 30th 1914. You can purchase a flier in the park that shows a diagram of the previous ancient volcano Mt. Tehema which was huge compared to Mt. Lassen and disappeared after multiple eruptions for millions of years.

Hooray! I actually created and posted m first panorama with the help of Applecart.

Hope you find it interesting and maybe like the image too!

An incredible sight, Richard! The shape of the crater is amazing, and the size hard to imagine if it weren't for the person standing on the rim. Oh my gosh:) And congratulations on the large post, a big help in seeing this image at its most impressive. Well done!

Hi Richard..nicely composed shot..you captured the incredible size of this volcano...nice work.

O M G !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Even thousands of miles away I can feel the butterflies in my stomach and the vertigo of looking inside! ... (I'm a bit affraid of hights :) anyways..... I believe this picture is amazing and also the fact that it was taken years ago makes it more special. (and the larger version is even better.)
Once again, a wonderful shot.
My best regards to you my friend!

ciao Marco

I have been to Lassen but never saw this. I m amazed I could have missed an open hole of an ancient volcano. You must have had to hike up high. Really great!
