You know Texas is a beautiful place, not dull and lifeless. It's unreal in the spring, and just plain incredible the rest of the year. It's a place of mountains, prairies, deserts, beaches, canyons, lakes, rivers, deep forests and huge cities. Wouldn't give you a nickle for DFW though!

I've traveled this state my entire life, from the panhandle to the valley. From Texarkana to El Paso. I've slept on the ground here more times than in a hotel here! In freezing weather and in heat over 109 degrees.
I've encountered 4 rattlesnakes in my life and lived to tell the story. Almost got hit in the face with a 4ft snake while riding a horse in Big Bend.

My goal in life is to show the beauty of this state. I think it's a noble cause.

THE FLOWER:
Mexican Hat (put that in your hat and wear it!)

Ratibida columnaris (Asteraceae)
A robust, drought tolerant annual to perennial variety native to the mid west and has naturalized throughout North America. The characteristic black, cone-shaped heads are surrounded by drooping, fire-red ray flowers with a splash of yellow accent. At maturity the upright branching stems may become woody. (sounds like me!)
Have a great day and remember "Don't Mess With Texas"
Geterdone.

The flower war has been declared!!
I love the placement of your Mexican Hat flower -- invites us to a dance?
And to all Texans who can't see colour: this seems to be colourful enough for me!

Hi neighbour...
The striking yellow petals are nicely being prominence against its green surroundings. Fine clarity and nice bokeh.

Regards,
Ramdan.

Hi Linda,
It's particular the composition what I like here. Well balanced and for some reason I like those "empty" slanted flower stems. Well observed and presented. Indeed a tiny beautiful place in Texas.

From a guy who is missing the world out of Texas right now, long live the Lone Star State!
Or, the lone flower state, in this nice pic...

I don't think I've ever seen a flower like this. A really pretty picture! This would look very nice framed on my wall :) Have a good day!

Wonderfully designed capture Linda.
Great splash of color on a dry landscape.
I like the light you caught here very much!

Hi Linda,I really like how you captured the light on the yellow petals, good DOF & composition.Sounds a bit scary that note about the 4ft. snake encounter, may put some tourists off

An unusual (for me) flower and i do like the gentle tones of this image. They compliment eac other nicely and the overall composition is simple and pleasing. I have read the forum threads with interest - and amusement! - and i think you have made a point with this shot :-)

What do you know, my father used to have this flower in his garden back home, in Romania! :)
It's what they say...It's a small world we're living in. :) Thank you for reminding me of home, this very moment, by looking at your wonderful and excellently taken shot!
Have a marvelous day!
Diana

HI Linda,
This flower is so beautiful offering its last petals to the sun!
Excellent DOF and composition! A very charming image! Annie

mexican hat bka sombrero? :) beautiful composition of the flower, Linda.. kinda like the flower too.. grow in the wild or? automatically if someone mentioned Texas i will always think of Waco or President Bush's place :) or and Dallas (JR Ewing).. hehe..

my former boss love it there.. of all the places he went Texas has a special place in his heart.. i remembered he mentioned the nice weather, etc.

regards, terry

Hi Linda
Lovely flower.Wonderful composition and presentation.
Congrats.
Friendly greetings
J.Diogo

Flowers aren't really my thing and I seldom take pictures of them, so I'm no expert. I think you could have found another POV to capture the flower and isolate its colour from the background. The stems of the other flowers so close to the main subject are very distracting as are the non-flowering Mexican Hats in the top and bottom right of the image. In fact there seems to be more focus on the stems than the actual flower.
All seems abit cluttered to me.
Just my opinion.
Graham

Hi Linda,
Very very beautiful composition , good bg.
Ralf

hi linda.
an amazing flower.
a great splash of colour. if it wasn't for lazylads note i would not have noticed the bare flower heads. it is difficult to look at any other part of the pic when there is a beautifully captured flower taking precedence.
i find it as sharp as a pin.

This motive is beautiful. I like the contrast between the background and the flower. Well done.
Best wishes,

Hi Linda,
Lovely macro with a very appropriate name.
Caught in beautiful low light the bright colors stand out nicely against the muted green background. Beautiful note about your noble cause.

Regards, Tom

I found something similar in one of my ambles through a nearby forest Linda only the flower was green. Good focus and colour and well composed.
David

hi linda, nice colors and off centre comp. sound like texas is a great place, i only wish i could of seen more when i was in dallas,
take care,
tfs,

Hi Linda, stupendous shot here of this Mexican hat. Didn't know they existed. More more more! Driving across TX is an experience, you keep looking at the horizon and seeing the same thing for days on end (going broad-wise) and you never seem to get to those 'disant mountains.' ;) The road just keeps on going and going and going and going and going...makes me OCD just to think about it. TFS

Hi Linda,

Very nice shot! I like the soft lighting, the very good DOF and the colors.
TFS,
Vassilis
