Another beautiful, still, foggy morning in Thompson, North Dakota. Perhaps a bit TOO foggy... if I didn't have the mileage memorized from town to the diversion, I would have been lost on soft gravel roads in zero visibility; to which personal experience can attest, is no good place to be.

It was a bit hairy at times, driving IFR in second gear, barely above idle rev's because I honestly couldn't see more than 15 feet past the front of the pickup. But once I got to the diversion and made the quick portage to the water, I was rewarded with one of those rare moments when Earth and God are one and the same. I've long said that such moments are my salvation.

I was on the water by 5:00 A.M., and when the sun rose a while later, the heavy fog stayed thick in the air. I lost sight of shore if I got more than 20 feet away from it! It made navigation a challenge, but this is a place I know well; getting lost would have been a pleasure rather than an unfortunate circumstance.

I was casting topwater for largemouth bass, and there were times when I would hear the lure splash, but I couldn't see it until I had reeled it halfway back to the canoe. It was thrilling to cast out and lose sight of my little plastic frog, and hear the commotion as a bass swirled up to take a bite, but not be able to see it happen.

That morning, I was alone in my quiet little world, which was only a calm, 40' x 40' piece of still water, fishing in the clouds.

It was something magical indeed. It was difficult to remind myself that no, I haven't passed away, and I was not paddling silently through Heaven itself. I can only hope that when my time comes, Heaven will be a place just like this.

Still waters, silent paddle.

Take me away...

Hi Brian,
Wonderful, moody still picture with all the tranquillity and calm feeling that comes out your frame. Excellent composition with the fishing rod, plant, boat and still water.
Good story in your note!
TFS,
Kind regards,
Kristof
