Photographing in Utah's Zion National Park can be very inspiring but it can be difficult as well. Lighting can always be a challenge and this composition was no exception.

The shot was taken just off the road near the park's eastern exit and it took me a while to find enough water to provide the reflection I was looking for. I used a 3 stop ND Graduated filter to control the light in the sky. Then in RAW conversion, I had to select certain points and lighten them (due the dark grad) to return some of the detail in the mid-ground. I'm no expert in raw conversion or Photoshop so any suggestions you may have are appreciated.

I like the composition in general but I regret the leaves in the top left corner. To get the shot I wanted, I had to compromise and keep them in the frame.

All things considered, I hope you like my efforts!

Hi Mike,
Your search for water certainly brought you a wonderful photo. The reflection is really wonderful and due to the transparancy of the water became even more beautiful. I love the entire composition where your low POV, the reflection and moment created a stunning result. I like how the eye is drawn from the reflection to the illuminated top. However, I do see some odd spots in contrast. The leaves on the top left and a spot just left of it are probably altered a bit too much.
TFS,
niek

hey Mike
great shot , excellent reflection and light

p.s.
thanks for the suggestions :))

Beautiful Mike! The calm, clear water in the foreground with the reflection, the lush green in the center, and the illuminated area at the top - excellent.

Definitely one of my all time favorites Mike.
I was stunned when I saw this shot on your blog, and I am stunned again.
It's a shot one has to just emjoy and not try and pick apart.
All the elements here came together and created a magical capture.
Well done and congrats!

The reflection is great and overall you've handled this well. Those leaves are really easy to clone out if they bother you. Good effort.

Hi Mike,

Lovely shot, your exposure is just about spot on, while retaining the reflections you have still managed to get clarity in the water showing the depth. The area is beautiful, I would have a job containing my excitement in such amazing surroundings.

A good POV to capture the reflection like this, and to create a very well balanced composition. Personally I like the leaves in the top left as it helps enclose that side of the picture. Well saturated colours and good details - a very pleasing picture.
Thanks for sharing
Mark

Hi Mike,
Splendid landscape, beautifully presented, awsome light conditions and reflection in the water. Peaceful, calm atmosphere, a really poetic environment. The best place to relax and think.
Great job, my friend!

Hi Mike,
Awesome composition here! Love the reflection and you've done a good job of managing the drastic change in light. Very well done!

Hello Mike !

Zion National Park is a Natural jewel. Your images are a great tribute to its beauty. This one is a great example.
Smart composition once again, The greens are perhaps maybe just a little to green.

But it is a minor point. Overall a superb post.
Congratulations,
Robert
