The butterfly exhibit is showing at the Krohn Consevatory during May and June. The wait to get in is at least 30 minutes. It's amazing how the kids respond to nature up close. The staff apply a nectar to their hands and (if they are lucky)an interesting visitor may stop by.
This is an owl butterfly Caligo eurilochus from Honduras. It is not only interesting because of its giant size and shimmering blue upper wing surfaces, the "owl eyes" on the undersides of the wings are its most striking feature. Closely related to the Morpho butterflies of South America this very large species is a true butterfly and not a moth. When disturbed, the butterfly exposes its "owl eyes" to the would be predator which are often small insect eating animals that are themselves preyed upon by owls and have a healthy respect for anything that resembles an owl.
Shot with monopod. PP minor cropping, USM, burned some hightlights on the hands and saved for web. |

Magnifique composition! Cette photo est riche de détails, de couleurs et de doux contrastes. L'éclairage des mains de l'enfant accentue la présence du papillon. Félicitation!
Hi Greg, what a great shot it was worth the wait. DOF is excellent and the sharpness is outstanding. Exposed spot on.
Great work thanks for sharing.

Hi Greg. lovely capture of the butterfly alight on the child's fingers. The children do love them, don't they. Well done.
Wow, great clear crisp macro. The colours, composition and composition are perfect.
