[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Vietnamese Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC, is a moving experience for former vets and non-vets alike. In my fourth year of college, I was called for active duty during the Vietnam War, but wasn't allowed to serve because of severe allergies (penicillin, bee and wasp stings, etc.). I often wonder how my life and the lives of those around me would have been irrevocably changed if I had fought in Vietnam. It's an interesting speculation -- What If?

In this image, an American veteran points to a name on the wall, and to the "plus" symbol that shows his friend is listed as missing. Diamonds indicated that a person's death was confirmed. If a person's body (who is listed as missing) is found, the plus can be converted to a diamond by chipping from point to point. If a person who is missing is found alive, a circle would be added around the plus symbol. To this date, no circles have been added to the wall.

I cropped the original image into a square format to zero in on the hand. The image was very over-exposed in the bright sunlight. I used a neon glow filter to convert the bright spots to shadow. By using brown and black as my glow colors, it brought out a golden glow in some areas of the image, so I selected the plus symbol and touched it up with a little gold.

I then adjusted the levels, and sharpened and resized it before uploading. A copy of the cropped original, before filters were applied, is posted in the workshop for comparison.

Very very nice picture. I like the focus on the hand, and your use of the filter... It adds another level to the "heaviness" of the picture, as it is already loaded with meaning. Great job.
