I caught this little fellow napping in a tree. It seems that by tucking his head under his chest, he has tuned out the busy world around him. I hope that he has his store of nuts for the winter:-)
Black squirrels are not a separate species, but a melanistic morpheme, casually known to scientists as a “color morph,” a fairly rare genetic variation. In the Northeast US, as far as has been determined, most of the black squirrels are actually morphs of the gray squirrel, Sciurus carolinensis. Ohio has an abundance of these curious black squirrels.
