Thank you all for the great comments on my portraits…I am especially glad to hear that so many of you are interested in taking candid portraits. There are a few things I have learned which may help….

The first issue is finding a subject that is interesting and hopefully unusual. This may be because they are young and beautiful but more likely older with some character…sometimes it isn’t what their features are like but their posture or body language. Sometime it is about the light and how it hits the subject.

Once I find someone I want to photograph I approach them and ask if I can take their picture. I usually ask I can take a picture of them with something like their motorcycle, dog, friend, etc. It is interesting that people who might be shy about being photographed alone are happy to have themselves photographed with their bicycle or something they value.

When they say OK…the next problem is the light. Harsh sunlight is almost always a waste of time. The light meter in the camera will create harsh shadows which will destroy the shot…I usually move the subject but sometimes they will resist…

I shoot the pictures on burst mode and set the camera on Aperture priority. I am usually close so I use either F5 for the full frame camera or F3 for the smaller sensor cameras (because I am standing further away). I will adjust the aperture if I have time but sometimes the whole process is about a minute…

I think the most important part of the shot is the crop…I believe the rule of thirds is a good starting place…I crop each shot quite a few times to choose what I want to emphasize and what I want to cut out…Symmetry is very important. In the case of this photo there is an arc that extends from the girls head down to the dog’s nose. While this is an arc it divides the shot into the left third and the right two thirds. The girl’s arm forms a horizontal line about 1/3 up from the bottom.

I posted a Black and White Workshop to show the differences in techniques.

I hope this helps….good luck.

Roger

This is superb Roger and I get to see the DOG! This wonderful wolf dog! Both are so pretty, very nice natural pose, just the best way to do a portrait! The affection between the girl and the dog is just beautiful! One of your best yet!

Linda

Love the affection here, between the girl and her dog. Very lovely moment. Great note too - so interesting to hear how you approach your subjects.

Ciao...bellissima questa foto
dallo sguardo della ragazza
e il muso del cane...
si capisce il forte legame
che c'è tra loro...
Complimenti

A nice capture of a tender moment between girl and her dog.

I am assuming that you didn't crop anything off the left hand side of this shot, and that the ommitted elements of the girl's right arm and right leg, and the dog's ear, were excluded at the time of shooting?

I can see why you might have done that for a tighter, more intimate shot, or for the purpose of off-centre composition, but I can't help feeling the photo might be better with those parts included?

Anyway, that's me being picky, it's another fantastic portrait!

Hi Roger, Another terrific portrait to share with us. I really like how you have captured her affectionate nature with the dog. Also, the dog is quite calm and relaxed in her arms. I like her pose, her interesting clothing, etc.. all come together to make a great composition.

Hi Roger,
Superb shot again, and the dog (or part wolf) goes better to this girl than cigars. :) Amazing sharpness and details, nicely saturated colours. Beautiful portrait, well captured moment! TFS.

Portraits arn't generally my thing but I can appreciate one that is well done. That is why I have been so impressed with your recent series especially the biker.
This one is much softer of course. As you mention in your notes the final crop cna make or break the process.
Colors look very natural and not pushed. Bravo

Dan

Hello Roger !

Thanks for the valuable note and tips. The serie is indeed quite unique. I hope you will pass your photos to her for her collaboration.

You indeed have a good eye , to spot a great model., and capture emotions.

Well done!
Robert

PS. A pro once told me . The worst nigthmare for a photographer ? Shooting a wedding outside on a sunny and cloud free day (^_^). Disaster ahead.... Much easier to shoot on a cloudy day for everybody ! Subjects and photographers (*_^)

Hello Roger
Wonderful moment and capture; I love specialy the line made by the sholders andthe girl's head, that continues in her arm and hand, and finish in the dogs head and in the jeans. It is a very elegant line that gives a great harmony and an elegant movement to the photo. Superb light and colour. Great image.
Best regards, mb

Hello Roger.
You pressed PUSH button right on time!
Great expression on her face :) as well as the impression on dog's muzzle. This portrait makes what portrait should make - itshows emotions and relations between dog and its owner.
What I probably don't like here is the tight crop on the top.. Don't like the idea that hairdresser was YOU here;)
Thanks for sharing,
Siarhei
