Here is a black and white shot that was asked for yesterday by muhammad muhsin….I am posting the color version in the workshop so anyone can convert the color to black and white using the following steps.

The conversion from color followed the following steps:
1. The background layer was duplicated
2. Layer 1 was separated into R,G,B channels to look at which was best suited to Brittany's coloring. It was clear that the Red Channel was most flattering and Blue was least.
3. Layer 1 was converted to Monochrome with the following settings:
a. R +64
b. G +39
c. B +1
4. Adjustement/Curves was used to make the black correct on the darkest part of Brittany's hair.
5. White curve was not touched.
6. Adjustement/Shadows and Hightlights were used the following way:
a. Shadow amt 5%, Tone 50%, Radius 192
b. Hightlight amt 15%. Tone 66%/ 156 px
7. Unsharpen mask was used to sharpen the image
8. Layers were flattened and then the Background layer was duplicated.
9. Layer 1 was changed to an Overlay layer which added dark contrast. Opacity was brought way down to 8%.

Experiment on your color images…there are amazing possibilities for black and white conversion.

Hi Roger
Another beautibul portrait of this lovely looking girl. Your notes are of great help. As I use element 6 I might be restricted as I don't have curves in the elements. Still I will have a go! Thanks again for the notes. Regards, Balwant

You can't really miss with this young lady, Rog.
Wonderful close crop, detail so good I have no word for it, beautiful tones, and a lovely expression. I like the bit of light you still caught with her eyes downcast. Absolutely wonderful. Many thanks and my great compliments,
Shelly

i was about to start believing that portraits lack impact in the absence of eye contact, but looking at this image, i guess i was wrong :)

thank you so much for your black and white post, i am sure you too can see just how much of an impact monochrome has had on this photo :) besides, it turned out quite successful because it has generated a very positive response from the audience too :) they've admired you, the model and the monochrome :)

i don't have anything new to say about how beautiful she looks, it goes without saying :) i just wanna add a technical tip:

looks like you post process your images in JPEG mode, nothing wrong with that, i wonder if you use RAW..? especially with a camera like the 5D-II :) coz i use black and white in-camera when i wish to shoot in monochrome :) the 5d has built in monochrome mode as well as a bundle of settings like filters and contrast settings that you can use to get rich, proper black and white photos out of your 5D II :)

also, if you shoot raw, you can always convert your color photos to b&w or vice versa using Digital Photo Professional, Adobe Lightroom or Apple Aperture (all are great) :)

you are quite blessed already, with a photographic eye, tools and beautiful models (possibly from other planets...hehehe), you just need to explore all the various features of your camera and lenses a little further to add another jewel to your crown :)

another beautiful photo of britanny :)
