3 Stages of Decay

This was the actually on the broad side of a barn on the side of the road in Southern Illinois, near Glen Carbon. Well, it looked like a barn, until I moved in front of the place and saw that it was an old gas station / general store type place. It was out of business - and had been for some time, but it looked like an enterprising person had actually painted the inside and was working on the outside. So this scene may not be around a whole lot longer. I was struck by the layers of repair and then the layers of disrepair in the photograph. The rusty galvanized steel building exterior had been patched with a piece of plywood which had been overlaid with an old metal Conoco sign. Apparently they gave up and allowed the vines to grow over it. In the summer this would be hardly noticeable because those vines would have great big green leaves covering the side of the building.
The day was cool and overcast, hence the even lighting. I added very little to this image except a bit of straightening and a slight crop to remove the blank edges after I straightened it, then added the frame, sharpened and saved for TL.
Thought I would start the weekend with this...
Have a great Saturday, y'all! |

Hi Reed,I love all these different textures & obvious different levels of deteriation of same, the large vertical format works perfectly, strong composition,it held my interest for sure. Summertime & the gas sign will not be visible so a good catch.

Great subject matter and beautifully captured - I like the way the light, shadow and colours create a natural kind of gradient through the frame, drawing the eye down towards those patterns of blue and brown at the bottom.
I'm not a fan of the title in the frame, it was big in the '90s but it seems dated now, but that's just a personal thing.
