No, it's not Michael Jordan, but he does play basketball ;) I took this earlier today. The almost unreal look of this picture is mostly natural, due to the lighting I used and the amazing new Nikkor 50mm f1.4G. I had a SB-800 with an umbrella at around 45 degrees. I did, however, edit and soften his skin due to acne. Is the perfect skin overkill? I think it is a bit much but I'll work on having a good balance next time....I created the almost half tone high contrast look by creating 2 duplicate layers of the background. The middle layer was desaturated and the top layer was set to "soft light." I adjusted the opacity of the bw layer until I got the look I desired. Hope you enjoy it!

Phil

P.S. I posted the original photo as a workshop so you can see the difference.

nice portrait
good focus
nice composition
well done

HI Philip, excellent detail in this portrait, the image almost looks 3 dimensional on the screen, it looks like a high quality air brushed photo a magazine would publish, well done

Hi Phillip,
Tremendous clarity with this shot, very nice focus too. The sort of photo you'd see on a rap album or a Nike advert. My only gripe is that the top of his head has been slightly cropped off. I quite like the look of the perfect skin, but he sort of looks like he's made out of plastic or wax, maybe one or two imperfections wouldn't hurt :). Very nice job though.

TFS,
Scott.

Hi Philip,

I think you've done a very good job on an interesting portrait. I'm sure the dude is very happy as well.
Matt

Hello Philip!
Beautiful portrait!
I like how you worked his face! Excellent PP work!
Best regards!
Lili

I really like the composition and lighting used in this shot. I think the skin treatment is good but does close to bordering too far. Still a very nice portrait. TFS

Good plastic surgery on the subject's acne there Phil! It looks really good. You might consider leaving just a hint of the facial blemish and see how that appears. Nice work!

Great use of DOF. Great colors and skin tone A little plastic effect on the skin in my opinion.
