end of the world...

Bandon, Oregon
December 31st, 1999
Remember the millennium bug? The world's computers were supposed to crash, stock markets tumble, utilities and crucial infrastructure would fail, even our cars would stop running. Maybe.
We drove to Bandon, Oregon that weekend because, if the end of the world came, we wanted to be stuck in a nice place.
This photo was from the eve of that event. We were in an odd mood, walking along the beach, wondering what would happen when midnight came.
[...]
I like the photo because, for me, it captures a mix of dread, alienation, and maybe hope of that day. The next day, New Year's Day 2000, when all seemed OK, Christina went for a swim in the surf...a bracing rebirth into the new millennium.
The photo was shot on Kodacolor 100, and scanned in using a Nikon Coolscan 5000, 16x multisampling. A little sharpening, otherwise little post processing. I considered brightening it, but the darker contrast seems to capture the mood more.
As always, workshops welcome should you have ideas on improving this print.

Nice shot, well composed Karl.. Obviously a bit of sharpness is lost in the scan - noticeably on the headland to the left. The graininess gives an old style feel that I like..
I flew on holiday that day to Barbados - the aeroplane made it despite all the hype :)
Cheers
David
Hi Karl,
Any one photo and a story that brings memories of that last day of the last century and millennium. Very good job of scanning. The picture itself is just beautiful.
Regards,
Jesús
Hi Karl,
I like the shot because I love the seaside with cliffs and rocks that add to the texture of the composition. Makes me wish I lived closer to the beaches in Texas except most are less dramatic. The shot wth the note tell a great story of the time GOOD JOB,
Thanks,
Johnny
