| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Before I engaged the use of the digital phenomenon of cameras and photo imaging I was saddled with the old film method of taking and sometimes "creating" photos. This particular photograph was a compilation of 18 different exposures on one frame of 35mm film. Yes "Eighteen" different exposures on one frame of film! In the "Highlands" neighborhood of Louisville, KY, where I lived for several years, while doing a feature news story, I wanted to create a photograph that incorporated a lot of the neon signs and storefronts along the Baxter Ave., Bardstown Road area, known as the "Highlands", sort of Louisville's version of Greenwich Village, NY. As I walked and rode up and down about a three mile stretch I used my Nikon F 35mm, w/43-86mm zoom lens, and the "No Advance" film frame feature of this particular camera. The exposures ranged from 1/8 sec. to 1 1/2 sec, as I positioned each shot not to interfere with the previous one. For some of the exposures I used a piece of black cardboard covering a portion of the lens to avoid stray light from the previous shot. I did this on two different nights. This final image was the best of the two nights of shooting. Each night's shoot took between two and three hours. Printed on glossy paper, and later on scanned into digital format. I did not use any PP or photoshop tools to enhance any of the images, only to do a small bit of contrast and brightening from the original print. Everything else remained as it was, except for my signature on the lower right hand corner. NO FOOLING! I was more than pleased with the final image, as were the editors of the publication I was doing the story for.
Camera: Nikon F2 35mm. Lens: 43-86mm zoom Nikkor. F/Stops, f/5.6-f/8, 1/8 to 1 1/2 sec. Film: Kodak Max 400ASA. No flash. Tripod: Yes! |

HI Joe
Looking almost like a bit from a movie film, you did an excellent job of multiple exposures.
I can almost hear the music of a young man with a horn blaring away.
