Every so often I like to throw myself under the bus! Do something different. Do something that most people might not like. My thought here is to challenge you to bust out of the "pixel" madness and go back to your roots. To where you came from. I will add this to my theme "Technical Nightmare", photos that have emotional impact, but technically the nay-sayers will have a stroke over.

This is C-41 process, 120mm Medium Format Film. Shot in a dark room. YES....it's grainy (it's film!)..... it's dark, blah blah. What does the photo bring up for you?
For me, a rarely get a shot at my daughter these days, she is off to college. But this past Memorial Day weekend she was home and I had a little leverage, she wants to shop, Mama wants to shoot...we make a trade. (blackmail, I know)

I took the film in and had it placed on a CD for processing. Out of a roll of 15 probably half came out well enough to post. I'm happy with my portrait experiements!
Have a great day!
B-)

Now this I like very much Linda. Fantastic b&w portrait, Shelbee looks relaxed and engaged. I admire your penchant for graininess, I like it too for it gives so much definition and character to the image. Best regards, Danilo

Hi Linda,

If it wasn't for the fact your daughter had a mobile phone in her hand this could have been taken in the 50's. I say that because your daughter has struck a very classical pose, petulant and beautiful, and I get a timeless feel to this shot. Thanks for having the gonads to post this I just love it.

Regards
Jon

Linda,

This is a great portrait. The grain adds a lot to the photo.

I also love to photograph my daughter, but no need to blackmail, yet.

Cheers,

Wellington

Boa tarde Linda
she is beautiful ( I have seen other photo) but here she is a superb young woman . Like a frame of an old movie. Of course I stop and I just can look.Love all the artefacts, full of charm.

Hi Linda,
This is a fantastic shot - grainyness works extremley well with this and I am a great fan of B&W. I would basically echo what Jon wrote - partly because I like how he works 'petulant' and 'gonad' in the same critique! ha well done and TFS

Hi Linder,
BRAVO-- back to the roots!!!! I commend you on this shot. I had a darkroom for years and years and this reminds me of the same grain and color tones I now miss. Excellent post and wow excellent expression captured. TFS Julie

A very nice picture with a good choice of black and white. I really like your busy daughter portrait.
Best wishes,
Achim

Really nice Linda! I love the graininess. And as others have said, if not for the cell phone, it would be a timeless shot. Love the surroundings ..the big bedframe behind her, the big white pillow (I might have cloned out the cord coming down the wall) - a real beaut!!
Stay cool down there!

Dear Linda, this lookslike a movie star picture of the 1950 or 60s,a time when B&W and lots of noise was used to create as much drama as possible, great stuff.;]
Since people started with digital, noise seems to be a dirty word or some sort of a crime, technical and feeling and atmosphere are sometimes 2 completely different issues.
This is a lovely picture ,and i would be proud of yourself and such a daughter, wauw.

jan

(One of noise heros is from Holland,Ed van der Elsken(1925-1990),have go on google and you will find out ;]

Hi Linda,
I like the way this shot looks. The grain adds an element of interest for me. I see this cell phone pose about 50 timees a day from my teenage daughters. Nice experiment and the results are great. Very nice work Linda.
Regards,
Kevin

Hi Linda, I do find the grain does give it an entirely different look. I like the way she is looking to the side. The lighting is interesting how it does not effect the headboard at all... interesting. Being that I like high contrast, I think I would try and boost it up a notch. It may bring too much light to her face though. Lisa

Linda, this portrait looks like a old picture of movie star! I like darkness and grain on this. It's photo with unique mood. I like it a lot!

Hello Linda
I love the poetry that the light (and the strong contrast with the dark zones), the great b/w work, and the grain gives to this image. It's wonderful.
Great moody work.
Good evening, Jose mb

Beautiful shot - the light works so well here, as does the naturalness of such an everyday pose. I suppose the composition could be changed a tiny bit - shifting her more to the left - but it's not important.

The grainy quality of the film + scan aren't an issue to me at all, I often like the look of noisy shots.

Lovely work
Rew

Hi Linda,

Lovely timeless shot, only film can give you that almost bacteria like grain, super natural pose and she is turning in to a real beauty.

Douglas

Hi Linda,
Was the bus damaged? Anyway, like the grainy idea here. Shelby is as always a great model, she must love this picture of her :-)
Like the pose, and if she didn't hold the cellphone it could have been a picture of a hundred years ago. Composition and light are excellent and really create a fine image. Never knew B&W and combination of noise could create such a fine picture. Great posting my dear!
Hans

I LOVE IT LINDA!!!

Keep up the film shots, their awesome!

hi linda, with all the fancy digital slr's and these crystal clear images that even an amatuer can get this is a nice change, i am an old school slide film guy so as much as i love the digital revolution i enjoy an old scratchy photo!!!
thumbs up from me!
ps, hats off for dealing with your girl off to college, i have 2 girls and my oldest (emily-12) acts like shes 17! when she moves out to go to school , job whatever i will be heart broken, i know its all for the good but where did my little girl go!!!!

take care,
thanks scott

hi linda,
when i first looked at this i was unsure whether i liked it or not. i decided to look at it a few times prior to making a comment.
the more i look at it the more it pleases me. the quality is very grainy but that seems to carry the mood. as jon said, it looks like it was taken in the 50's were it not for the cellphone.
you have achieved a great deal with this.
hugs,
Brian

Hi Linda,
Back to the good old days of the dark room, grainyness worked out very well and nice sharpness on your daughter with great facial shadow effect.Nice contrast with cell phone and almost "sepia" background tones.Great shot.
