***Horizon tilted on purpose for dramatic effect. My buddy Caledonia does it all the time, so I decided to break the rules (gasp!!)

Some of you know this young man, This is Farmer Hick Graeme. Tricia, Mitra, Els, Janice, Dawn and Donna know him. He is Condor of the IroNation. He is my buddy. He also is the little boy riding the bicycle in one of my recent shots.

For this I converted to Monochrome and used the RED channel. Then converted to sepia, added a slight clarification. Why did I not use sunny 16? One reason is that my super wide has been broken and won't shoot over F5...BUT.... I like the results, and I've spent my money on L glass, rather than having this repaired... I DO however want another wide angle and maybe Santa will bring me one this year!

Of the whole weekend, this has got to be my favorite shot.
Hope you all have a great day!
Linda

Hi Linda,
Great shot, the monochrome effect works well with this one and the pp work paid off in full. Great low level PoV, I think the horizon could be with leveled off but that is just me being picky. Great tones, Dof and presentation.
Cheers
Bri

hi there i realy like this shot Linda it is very atmospheric with a grt pov the details are excellent your pp work realy adds to the shot tfs
regards bryan

Splendid - in a nutshell.

Interesting pp, good notes about it too! Sunny f16 I think is only needed if your light meter has gone belly up - just rule of thumb and all that but at this wide angle the f5 is fine for DOF.

hi Linda

It's a good composition indeed!
i like the almost sepia tone and PP that you got and the position of the boy on the sand and border light.
I like also the sky of the main image and the house on the BG.
I don't think that the f5 aperture did so much difference here, there's a great DOF in the image anyway, I just think that the beach line is a bit out of the horizon line.

Taba

Hi Linda,

How are you?
well sometimes breaking the rules also provides good result as it is over here. good wide angle shot and a good b/w. a good pov out here, great tones, dof. also very well presented.
Thanks for sharing.

Regards,
Sanjib.

Hi Linda,
Well rules were made to be broken. I love the low POV in this shot. The directional light is perfect giving you a nice shadow and awesome light. The lines in the beach look wonderful. The color choice here also works well. This is a great portrait. Easy to see why it's your favorite of the weekend. Have a great day!
Regards,
Kevin

Hi Child:
sorry the shot good,a professional photographer to the skyline this unbalanced, I think it is on purpose.

regards
Salomao

Hola Child of God,
No entiendo el significado de "efecto dramático" para justificar la inclinación del horizonte. Puedes dar alguna exlicación al respecto?
Regards,
Amadeu

Hi Linda...great shot...wonderful perspective and great blacka and white tones.

Roger

Hi Linda,

Super shot, especially that slightly angled horizon, I will need to try that!!
I really like your POV lovely depth.

I have just managed to book a cottage on the Isle of Skye next week, so I am hoping for some good weather, hope to get some good shots.

Hi LInda,
This is the kind of photography, I hope make one day! Full of emotion!
I adore the composition with the pose of this young guy looking at the horizon. A total feeling of freedom, here! The scene make me think at the title of a novel "La vie devant soi" of Emile Ajar.
The conversion in B&W with the addition of sepia is very effective considering the timeless mood of your subject.
Congratulations! Annie

Boy, Linda,
it IS a dandy. I LOVE the composition and the way the tracks and the way he's looking off lead so well into the shot. Superb light and shadow, marvelous depth and I think the B&W is perfect for it. What a great photo! Many thanks and warmest wishes,
Shelly

you broke the rules-you sinner! what were you thinking hahaha!!!
i like this a lot, the b/w is great, the tilted horizon, the low point of view, its very dramatic!
well done,
tfs,
scott

Ah, the old Horizon Tilt, eh? I'm sure there's a formula - it's a matter of degrees that separates "cool tilt effect" from "this looks sloppy." I think using a wide lens also helps, as you have done here.
The low POV is effective indeed. Personally I'd have cropped a little from the left, there's more negative space behind him than there needs to be, and that half-house is bugging me.
Just details, though. It's a great shot.

Olá Child

Uma foto espetacular.
Amei a aopção de cor e os detalhes
são lindos. Ótima perspectiva e
textura.
Parabéns!
Grande abraço.
Vera.

Hello Linda,

This really is a classy shot!
I love sharing the view with the young man (focal image). The textured tracks are the start of an interesting journey ... perhaps in the mind of the boy!
B&W, with sepia tints, works very well.
I'm not sure why the horizon needs to be tilted in this instance ... am I missing something!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

hi sweetypie.
a great pov with excellent composition.
lovely handling of the bw.

did you know your horizon isn't straight? ;-)
hugs,
Brian

Hi Linda, Terrific photo of Graeme. I like his pensive look to the distance of the path of the truck? (boys and trucks!!). The coloring is very effective. The tilt is something I would not have thought to use as a "dramatic" effect. I think it would have also been fine with a straight horizon. I really like the low, low angle that you chose to make the shot... just emphasizes the distance on the beach. AHHHHH, I can smell the salt air now! :)

Like the POV and sepia effect
not to sure about that wonky horizon

This is a lovely picture full of emotions of all kind, full of poetry.I am not sure about the horizon tilt if it gives more power to the image or not.The choice of the sepia is brilliant. The composition is outstanding. It really pleases me a lot.Congratulations!

I love it!!! A perfect example of why you are one of my favorites on this site. I'm sure the original was beautiful, but with the pp work you've done on this it's stunning!! Beautiful artwork Linda!!! Be proud! TFS

Hi, Linda -
I admire your vision for tilting the horizon - I would never think to do this but it works really well here - I think the low POV makes this possible. This is really a fantastic scene - your model is in an authentic pose and sand & sky go on forever. Very sharp. Love the monochrome treatment and vignetting. Very cool!

Bonjour Linda
Your shot reminds me when, younger, I was trying all sorts of Ilford or Kodak papers to find the good grain and the good tone, and I must say that I love the perfectness of this one (with or without tilt).I shall not tell you why, you know it as well as me.As I told you one day , you capture light as no one.I like your sense too of autoderision and humour. This is the reason why I come towards you to ask you to lead some of your friends here [who so brutally sometimes write unpleasant (at least) things to some people] to stop their attacks which, inevitably, give rise to retort as well and is cause of an haemorrhage of talents out of TL.This cannot be the aim of a "Child of God",on the contrary. And I am sure it is not.You say yourself you are sometimes breaking the rules. That is good: rules must be followed in the spirit , not in the letter. So I should be grateful to you if you could convince your friends that they too practice backslapping sometimes and that this should no longer be a matter of quarrel on TL.As for me,I can honestly say that if I find you had one day a speedy and false judgement about somebody , you are also a great photographer (no backslapping here)and I must count with you to give back to the site the dignity it should have never lost.
Have a nice (working) day.
Henri
Ps :hope my poor english doesn't betray my thought.

Gidday Farmer Hick - good to see you relaxing at the beach, having a day away from the farm.

And Hola Linda
Yes, nice image Linda, and I like your PP work on it.
I'm trying to do crooked images - and I find it so hard - I keep wanting to straighten them up!!! And if I plan it on the angle it seems to come out backwards!!!

Well done
Janice

I really like your LOW POV here Linda....
The tilt does not so much bother me but from you? I'm shocked to see it =)
I think the BW works really well here to keep the focus on our little farmer...
I am shocked you are allowed to drive on your beaches. but I do like the added element it adds to your photos..

Enjoy =)

Oh my how could you break the rules!! ;) its the funnest part about life I think. Very cool shot nicely presented! TFS
