[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
On our way from North Powder to bend we made a quick stop at John Day Fossil Beds National Monuments; Painted Hills. I would have liked to spend more time and during the early and late hours but we had to get to our next cabin before the evening started. Atleast we got to see it and I was able to make some photos.

I have to say that the drive up to the site is most wonderful. The landscape changes from a lush green to a monotone brown and all of a sudden these wonderful red and yellow colors appear. It literally starts after a sharp bend in the road.

I opted to use a long focal lens so to capture the texture, shapes and colors instead of showing the entire landscape. It was also a necessity, since we were there at the brightest time of the day.

WOW~ The sharpness is excellent here Niek! I love the bands of color, horizontally, and then the criss cross overlapping layers vertically! I'm so impressed with the sharpness! F8 is perfect here!

Hello Niek,
Very nice presentation. I like the mix of colours, forms and angles. They push the dynamics of the picture to the limit. Almost unreal.

Denis.

Stunning landscape and colours here Niek, this is amazing. Framing is simple, levels are spot-on. Would've loved to see some kind of human element in the shot to get a sense of scale, it's very had to guess.

Wow.. wat een prachtige plek Niek... ik kan me voorstellen dat je dat liever in de "gouden uren" zou hebben gezien! Geweldig!
Ondanks het licht heb je hier de kleuren en lijnen prachtig gepakt... Heel mooi!
't is bijna magisch...

Bonjour Niek,

Quelle image, merci de nous faire découvrir cet endroit !
Des teintes toutes douces et assez inimaginables pour des collines.
Amicalement
Valérie

Hi Niek,
It is a magical location for sure.I was told, that up to last year, this area was not roped off & one could walk right up to the base of these hills, allowing the opportunity for close ups.I thought it unusual that you chose this spot to take your image as I also took this same exact spot, though I'm sure several hundreds more also did.Your image certainly catches all the lines, curves & shapes of this formation as well as its natural colors for the light you had to work with.
Later in the year, those small crevices are covered in green & yellow flowers, adding even more colors ,an amazing place indeed,
TFS

This is a riveting scene, Niek. As you know, I took a trip West recently, and saw landscapes I'd never seen before. Obviously, there is still much to discover.

You've done this well, showing the contrasting colors with good lighting and crisp, sharp detail. Good choice of lens and aperture -- you show the texture off well, with solid depth of field.

Finally, I'm glad you left just enough foreground at the foot of the hills to give us some sense of the vast scale of the vista before us.

Well done!
Jim
