I know that cars are not the most popular shots on this site…but check out this story…

Arturo Keller has a winery in Petaluma, a few miles from my house. He also has one of the most extensive car collections in the world and rumored to have the single largest Mercedes collection. In his tasting room today was this 1952 Bentley which is not one of his prizes but still and interesting subject for a photograph and an interesting HDR project.

The room this car was in had terrible light. The room was very dark with scattered flood lights around the room and window light coming from the right side. This shot was taken using the 24-70 lens at the wide focal length. Because of the wide angle the shot had to be skewed to straightened out the angles.

I took a series of about 10 shots to make the HDR colored version then converted it to black and white. As with all my shots, curve adjustment, contrast, and sharpening were all done…because the focus was done through the teathered computer there was almost no sharpening necessary.

The Detail Enhancer in Photomatix has a lot of adjustment possibilities…I start at the top and go through each one. If you are patient with Photomatix you can avoid all the halos and bizarre tones and come out with a natural shot that just has an extended dynamic range.

I encourage everyone to start playing with HDR..you will need Photomatix, a tripod and a remote cable….but you will be able to greatly improve low light shots and backlit shots….Good luck.

HI Roger
For the great photographer that you are, this has to be the photographer's dream to find such a subject.
The tiles going in different directions, the lines from the ceiling, and the stairs at the back while the car shines with good reflections and shadows.

Hi Roger,
Nice shot with excellent tones and PoV. I used the Photomatix programme for my last posting - thanks for the info on that, I also use Dynamic Photo for Pseudo HDR which is also an easily manageable dedicated programme. Lovely posting. Best wishes
Bri

Boa noite Roger

I realy must have luck to do what you have done here.
I must print your notes to mplay in summer. You make me feel it very interesting-

Thanks.

Hey, Roger -
Great HDR - love the symmetrical composition which compliments the features of the car. The sharpness is excellent and the highlights on the shiny finish are very attractive. The stairwell behind the car adds an artistic graphic element. Your HDR results are really excellent with wonderful exposure throughout that manages not to look unnatural. Cheers -

Your excellent technique saved that image taken in a difficult lighting situation. Well done Roger!

Hi Roger,

Even if this is not one of his prizes it really is a great and remarcable car.
Very good fited and presented. Very nice and useful description.

Indeed HDR helpt to show all the perfect details and light on this car.
The light reflections are perfect and the BG with the wooden structure is well chosen.
Congrats and TFS.

Have a nice sunday,
scubli
