It is good portrait. Perhaps without this board on 2nd plan this photo could be better.
Maybe this http://www.snowsuit.net/ site will interest you.

Hi Daniel,
Nice shot. You picked out a guy that has a lot of character. I have to somewhat agree with "zielsko," the board is a bit of a distraction, I would recommend for you to use a much wider aperature and let the backgroud fuzz out a little more. But everything else looks okay. Good expression, good focus, good colors. Good job.

A nice portrait Daniel. Nice detail and he is indeed a character, lots of stories I bet. I also agree about the background. B

how did I miss this one? You are very good at finding weird, I mean intersting, people to take photos of. I guess living in NYC helps. Of course you know I am going to say that the sign is distracting but other then that the composition and sharpness are good. Colors too.
I always have my camera set on Aperature priority and I 90% of the time have my lens set to the lowest apperature that it can do. The kit lens would be f/3.5 @ 18mm and f/4.5 @ 70mm but I borrowed a 50mm lens which could do a f/1.4 apperature.
If you take this same photo on wide angle and f/3.5 you would have to get close. This means the background will not be as blurry. But if you stand back and zoom to 70mm @ f/4.5 you will see the background more blurry. It is because dof has to do with apperature AND distance from the subject.
So my suggestion is stop using Program mode and use aperature mode and the lowest apperature your lens can do.
Here is some inspiration for you.

Daniel,
Isn't this the Country & Western singer Johhny Paycheck? Nice capture here Daniel, The focus is good and the lighting is well caught. Your doing good getting people to pose for you. Any tips on not getting a "NO, you can't"?
Anyway, Good work.

Hi Daniel,
I like this nice portrait, with the expression of solitude of this man. The lighting and the clarity are excellent. Great capture.
