| Back in July 31 1976 there was a massive flood down the Big Thompson canyon. This was a popular picnic area, and home of the hydroelectric power plant that provided electricity for the town beginning in 1925. The building was instantly destroyed by the wall of water that hit that night. Interestingly enough, i remember that we had talked about going up to Estes Park that night but for some reason decided against it. We might have been one of the many casualties. The plant has been replaced, and as you can see it is a park once again. I liked this for the contrast it provides between the before and after. They have toughened up the replacement and widened that area so that it is not as susceptible to repeat damage. If i remember right the wall of water was probably 17 feet high in that area that night. |
