My seventh image documenting the Canberra Bushfire 2003 and its aftermath. Taken six weeks after the event. It shows how different vegetation reacts to fire. On the left are native eucalyptus trees, already growing new leaves along the trunks. On the right, only one kilometer away from the eucalypts, stood this plantation of non-native pine trees, completely dead. It had provided top quality fuel for the big fire. Duffy, the part of town which was worst hit, was closest to this plantation, in fact situated right across the street. Still, afterwards many inhabitants wanted a new pine tree plantation right there, because they had loved it so much.

Hi Cordelia- I like the side by side comparison of how the native trees recovered compared to the non-indegenious ones- it looks like piles of ash on the right, or is this just due to the lack of vegetation? Wonderful documentary on the fire and the after-effects- superb work!

Best wishes,
Steve

Hi Cordelia, this is a good photographic comparison of before/after fire.. pine may have been the wrong choice for this place.. we can only hope not to see such a disaster..
