'Black & white outside' - what a difficult subject! Thank you Helen (Helkoryo) for making us think outside the digital colour square!

Searching through my images I found many of them just 'didn't do the trick', meaning that they couldn't simply be converted to black & white without losing much of their visual impact.

This photo worked best. It was taken in the Sculpture Garden of the National Gallery of Australia. One of the art works there is a 'fog sculpture' by Japanese artist Fujiko Nakaya. Every day between 12 noon and 2pm, it is turned on to produce fog from water sprayed through dozens of small nozzles. The fog stays under those trees from where it is dispersed in beautiful layers across the near-by pond or wherever any winds will blow it. On a hot summer's day one can have a most refreshing lunch break there.

Shutter speed: 1/50; F-stop: 4; ISO: 80

PP: Using Picasa, I converted it to b&w, increased contrasts, framed and re-sized it. (The contrasts will come out better on my 10-year old monitor than on LCD displays.)

very beautiful and mysterious. makes you keep looking deep into it, trying to spot some creepy beings. well captured.

Great! I love those foggy picture... and by using black and white, it add to it!.

A lovely tranquil scene.
Well taken. You've chosen a good photo to work with in black & white.
I love the softness of the image created by the mist and sunlight.

Capturing fog/mist/light in this way is something I find very tricky to do properly - you have managed it very well indeed, this is a lovely atmospheric shot with great contrasts. Good one!

Cordelia, this is fantastic. One of the finest. The sunburst (sort of) is so perfect that it takes me right to the enchanted forest. Looks like at any moment the princess of the elves will come floating out ...
Nothing to say about the PP except that it is perfect. Wish I had ten points to give.

An excellent choice Cordelia. I love the tones and contrasts through out. The light and mist just make this so mysterious looking. Excellent work and great contribution to the theme.

Bonjour Cordelia,
Tu as su faire le bon choix de photo pour la convertir en B & W . Tu as su bien calibré les contrastes et les nuances entre les tons variés de noir et de gris . L'effet visuel est très réussi et la photo dégage un atmosphère saisissant.
Daniel

I agree with your note Cordelia, it is a very difficult and challenging theme this one; you however have made it a very interesting one; this image is simply stunning!
Very moody, tranquil and with great lighting.

Very well done, Gary

Hi Cordelia,
excellent shot for the B&W outside theme
well done
Jack

You wouldn't guess just from looking at it that the scene is from an art gallery in the centre of a national capital city. That's part of the mystery you've been able to achieve. It's one of your best pictures. I like the thirds - the grass in the front, the fog in the middle and the dark canopy above, but with each layer revealing interesting variations. One could look at it for hours.
Excellent stuff!

Hello Cordelia!
It's right now that we have fogs and mists like that. You've managed very good capture of light protruding through the trees. B/w is a good choice.
Greetings!
Anton

Hello Cordelia,

Beautiful black and white in the mist. Spooky feeling with those rays shining through.

Great view on B&W forest. This forest look little mystic with that mist.

Hi Cordelia,

magic mood in this shot! Extraordinary sunrays through the branches. B/W is a good choice.

TFS!

Gio

A mysterious and eye catching b&w shot. The light through the trees works really well and you've captured the fog perfectly. Great stuff!
Thanks for sharing
Mark

An excellent image Cordelia. The PP work brought out the best of teh rays and the mist. Good foreground detail and lovely semi silhouettes. That garden must be a reasonably new addition or perhaps teh National Gallery wasn't there when I was. TFS,
David

Many thanks for your comment on ‘Holy Trinity - old building sepia’

Magnifique! L'effet de brûme, le côté mystique.
J'aime beaucoup.

Perhaps you could have posted it as a WS (if available :-))

Anyway, well done.
