My baby boy Rhys.
How much he has changed in such a short period of time.
A cold day in Sydney today, so I rugged Rhys up nice and warm as to take some photographs outdoors.
I played around with some effects in CS3 and used soft light filter and added some grain.
What I would like to know is if I should have used other lens (55-200mm) for this type of shot. Is the 18-55mm not so appropriate for portraits? Which one would have better results? |

Yes, the other lens would have been better for this shot.
See, with your kit lens as they now call it (50mm lens) you can get distortion if you get up too close to do a portrait that fills the entire frame. It can often make their noses appear bigger than they are. This one seemed to come out okay though, but in the future I would recommend using your other lens.
Plus you can get closer to your subjet with getting "right up in their grill", you know? It makes the subject more comfortable to be a bit further from them. But not too far, or then you will have to deal with motion blur.
Between 80-100mm is ideal.
Here you also have a bit of noise which can be cleaned up with neatimage or the like, but other than that its a cute portrait.
Well done.
