Yellow Face Spur Winged Plover
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This bird's face was so yellow it almost looked as if it was painted. At the Botanical Gardens just next to the city, near Farm Cove.
Thanks to "HapiSnapa" for identifying this distinctive bird.
Notes from Burke's Backyard site.
The Spur-winged plover (Vanellus miles) is so named because it has a sharp, yellow, black-tipped spur on each wing. It is also known as the Masked lapwing and Masked plover. It is a long-legged wading bird with a black head, white belly and yellow facial wattles. Plovers are found Australia-wide. The Spur-winged plover is found mainly in South and Eastern Australia.
Spur-winged plovers are ground-nesting birds, and they usually have two chicks. These birds used to migrate from Australia to Siberia, where they could nest in peace without any predators around. However, they now breed in Australia, and have to constantly defend their chicks against intruders. |

Lovely photograph. It's very difficult to take a shot of birds but then you have managed to explain with a note too. tfs.
Hi Murray
Nice sharp photo of a Spur Winged Plover (Vanellus miles novaehollandiae) notice the little yellow spur on the wing, we have them in NZ as well, very vicious protectors of ther nests.
Crisp, sharp, clear. You did well adjusting your ISO to secure a quick enough shutter speed, nice job.
Still looks a little more exposed than it needed to be, I think you could've chanced ISO400 with other settings the same, and still got a good shot.

Hi Murray
Good catch of the plover, which I don't recall seeing around South East Qld. The green grass makes a fine bg. Superb use of a shallow dof. Tfs!
Wow, what a funny looking Bird this is, never seen it before.
Good capture of it, Murray.
Best regards, jan
