Doesn't the old joke go that Australia was the last continent God made - and by that stage he was so sick of creating countries that he only filled in the edges, and left the middle of it empty ...? And then dumped in all the creatures He'd created that were ugly, nasty, dangerous, stupid, or simply too bizarre to work?
Well that degree of uniqueness also makes it a special and invaluable place to learn about our geological world and the evolution of species so I guess it's a good thing!
