[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
In winter we feed our local parrots to keep them in good condition. Apples is one of the vitamin food sources important for the health of the birds. By Zeus, in autumn they visit my apple trees daily.
However there is more than one customer for a free visit to McHelmut. Wasps, bees and ants come and take advantage of a juicy apple. But they have to wait until the parrots have bitten through the skin and left. The parrots are on top of the ‘apple’ chain, well I am but I pass this time! The wasps are busy minding their own business so it is quite safe to get close and personal. If you look closely you can see a ‘ball’ of apple pulp in-between the jaws of the wasp. They seem to chew the apple and roll the pulp into a ball and suck the juice out of it and then move on and chew the next bit and roll it into a ball. And so on and so… until it gets dark and cold.
Handheld macro 105mm, in manual mode and plenty of sunshine (natural light) does the trick. Because these critters aren’t moving fast, you can concentrate on a good DOF, rather than speed.

Critiques [Translate]

Hi Helmut - "Handheld macro 105mm", impressive result and a good note to go along with the image.

The lesson for me here is on the DOF - f11. Whenever I try and do macros I have a mental block and go for shallow DOF/faster shutterspeed - that's a bad habit I need to get out of, I think.

The wee ball of apple here is the icing on the cake for me...and the diagonal composition is very cool.

Great macro shot and a good note, Helmut! Well done!! Congratulations and TFS!

Very striking colors you got here, Helmut. Very good POV and DOF. Some pixelation in some areas, especially apparent on its back. The overexposure is effective here.

What a shot, Helmut! Incredibly vivid capture. I think I'm going to need to get a macro lens... do you like the 105mm? I too am shooting primarily a D300 (also have a D70s that does nice work). Excellent notes, too. TFS, Sir. -Kelly

Superb colour and detail Helmut, I don't use a tripod when I am chasing insects. Nicely composed and the front on shot works well. The question must be asked, do ou live in Bracknell and if so where exactly is it?,
