[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the caterpillar of the Large White or Cabbage White butterfly(Pieris brassicae)in the family Pieridae. Obviously I didn't know that, I Googled it.
He not only feeds on the cabbage or so it seems, he feeds on my Radish Leaves as well. The green strip across his back turns yellow as the caterpillar matures. This fellow was difficult to shoot, as he kept chomping away and moving his body and his head and at 1/15 and without flash that was tricky. He uses a pincer movement to cut through the leaves at ‘great knots’. And no matter how hard I look I can’t find his eyes.
This butterfly (not this particular one mind you) was found outside Europe in Canada in 1860. It had spread to California by 1883, then Hawaii by 1893 and then New Zealand by 1930. Soon it reached Melbourne in 1939. It spread across the length and breadth of Australia in only four years, reaching Perth in 1943. Don't quite know when it reached my garden. Not surprisingly, at the cost of petrol/gas at the time:))
Picture is cropped and some colour adjustment have been made.

Hi Helmut,
Very sharp macro of this caterpillar!
I like the nice composition, the fine details on his hair and the deep green colors against the dark background.
Interesting note with a fine humoristic touch!Including the title! Bravo! Annie

Very sharp !
Nice capture. It's worth the effort.
By the way, It reminds me the proverb : "You are what you eat".
For this caterpillar, the answer is "green"

Hi Helmut - I'm going to run out of superlatives for your macro shots. The detail and sharpness are bang on the button. That glob of spit/whatever is a great feature.

Have to confess I checked the EXIF data to make sure that the 1/15 wasn't a typo :-)

Nice note as well. Next time go for a frontal and we can do a proper "eye hunt" :-)

Hi Helmut..beautiful close up shot...excellent details.

Roger

Olá, Helmut!

Bela macro! A foto está bastante nítida, conseguimos enxergar pequenos detalhes da lagarta, como seus pelinhos, por exemplo. O título casou perfeitamente com o assunto aqui apresentado. Great job!!! TFS!

Too bad Mellow Green was not the theme of the day (^_^)

Absolutely superb post. Love the details of your macro and the unusual position of your subect too. Format and crop are fitting perfectly for a clean composition.

Well done !
