The Barrel Cactus...

This fascinating and architecturally beautiful cactus usually reaches from around five to eleven feet tall and has numerous parallel ridges that run down the sides. These ridges are topped with dangerously sharp 3-4 inch spines. The pleated shape of the Barrel Cactus allows it to expand when it rains and store water in its spongy tissue. It shrinks in size during dry times as it uses the stored water.

They are one of largest cacti of the North American deserts. Barrel Cactus flowers always grow at the top of the plant. They bear no spines and the fruits become fleshy and often juicy when mature. The pulp of barrel cactus has been widely used for making cactus candy.

I took this photo in a greenhouse within the Hobart Botanical gardens. TFR.

Good 'sharp' image Martyn, I like the symetry of this one. It works well.
Pete.

These barrel Cacti are super plants - but so prickly!! Our local garden centre sells them,
Nice and sharp in many ways, Martyn, I'm impressed!!
Well done
Janice

Hello Martyn.
Excellent 'close up' of this beauty.
Stunning sharp with perfect natural colours.
I do have one at home, taken with me from Isla Margarita, Venezuela. now about 9 years ago. It grows very slowly, its now about 5 inches diam. Still hope it will flower someday as that flowers becomes a kind of red peper with seeds in it.
Thanks for the info as well.
