Helleborus

Native to the mountainous regions of Europe, Greece and Asia Minor, Helleborus niger is a member of the Ranunculaceae, or buttercup family. It has pure white blossoms which bloom at Christmas time in the northern hemisphere, hence the common name Christmas Rose. Niger, the species name, means black, and refers to its dark coloured roots.

Common name: Hellebore, or Christmas Rose

Botanical name: Helleborus niger

Hey Dave, this is beautiful.

It's a lovely image showing the flower off so prettily. They usually hang their heads down and are hard to photograph in the garden - so well done on this capture.

There are many different colours now - some different tones of green, burgundy, deep pink, dull pink, cream and these pink tipped ones - nice one!

Janice

I am not sure I have seen these bofore!
I love the colours and the sharpness is spot on, well done for a zoomed non macro shot!!

Hello David,

Mmm! This is smashing!
I love the way it is positioned at the top of the frame and looks downwards over the green abd the buds! Great composition!
Lovely sharp focus at the focal point and excellent textural details.

I think this is what we call a Christmas Rose. It doesn't really matter, a rose by any other name ...!

Have a great weekend,
Bev :-)

Beautiful macro shot, delicate and elegant and quite outstanding in this category by the simple but difficult fact that it manages not to be kitschy.

Hey David,
I really like the vertically off center compostion here, really makes this shot special.
The tech work and technique is good as always but, for me, the composition really makes this one.
Good work.

Hello David,
Christmas roses have a magic about them and you have displayed it so well here.Gorgeous soft colours and detail.
They are hard to photograph as they tend to hang their heads--but you managed very well.
Well presented. A treat!

This is how a flower picture should look like - perfect. Good DOF, no OE on the whites, a touch of pink - lovely.
In the past we also had them in our garden and they really stood out flowering when no flower did.
Thanks for reassuring me that no winter lasts forever, because it is getting awfully dark here in the mornings - winter is on our doorstep.
