[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A couple of days early but Thursday 21st is the birthday not only of my older sister Judy but the birthday of José MBrito e Silva (jose mbrito); I hope your day is filled with happiness José.

José has some impressive sepia and B&W (plus other tones) images in his gallery and I offer this as his Ecard.

There was a discussion in the forums recently regarding the use of the black and white setting on a digital camera. This made me think that with that setting, the changing of contrast, altering the exposure bias value and coupled with PP work a reasonable black and white image may be possible. For a couple of days I took colour and B&W images of various scenes and did some experimenting, the day I took this image I only took the B&W.

Apart from the obvious black and white setting I altered the contrast to+2 (hard) and the exposure bias value to -7, the from camera version in the workshop.

PP Work - Paint Shop Pro X

Image - Rotate left
Perspective correction
Adjust - Brightness and Contrast - Highlight/Midtones/Shadows
Adjust - Brightness and Contrast - Clarify - Strength of effect 2.0
Added a thin border, resized and saved

So, what was better for you - take the photos in B&W or change them to B&W from colour? I don't think my camera takes B&W photos - I must check it out!!

The contrasts look really good here Dave. Nice strong whites and greys - and deep blacks. It's an excellent image - I'm impressed....

Bravo
Janice

I must say David, the way you handled the B&W settings has given you the perfect B&W picture.

It looks amazing (and I am not a B&W fan) - makes me want to rethink the B&W possibilities.

Congratulation for your sister and for José.

This is wonderful David. Superb tone and contrast, gorgeous reflection. (I was on a photo trip yesterday to a marina and the scene reminded me of you and wharf postings.) José will enjoy this. Good day! Danilo

Hi David

I hesitate to criticise, because I have a high regard for the majority of your other photos.

The scene you have taken a photo of is stunning, as I remember seeing it in real life - and in your colour photos. I think a B & W photo does it an injustice. I know you were trying something different for a reason but I find this a disappointing photo from you.

The background trees and rocks blend in together as a grey mess rather than the beautiful colours they are . . . sorry, but this is my opinion.

Stunning details in this! The clarity of the reflections in the water is quite remarkable and the contrast levels for your B&W conversion are superb

Hi David,
Both the WS version and this are beautiful B&W images.
Great range of tones, good contrast, and deep blacks. Well done.
I've tried B&W with the 5D, but I feel they lack the punch of a good colour image desaturated. In PS Elements 3 I use Enhance/Adjust Colour/Remove Colour.
Aparently desaturate always leaves the colour information, even at 100%.
Remove colour does exactly that, saves some file size.
Cheers,
Pete.

Hello David

Amazing B/W.
I am amazed with the beauty of the place and of the beautiful visual effect!
the light that contemplates in the boats is wonderful and they enrich
still more the b/w. Beautiful composition and reflexes!
Excellent visual and very well composed!
Greetings, pasamdo!

Sorry I missed this yesterday David! TL has been slow and and maddening at times! nice reflections here, a little worried it looks like OE on the side of the white boat, most likely unavoidable! But love the water in this David!

Hello David
Your works prompted me to experiment with 3D framings and now I OUGHT TO realize such spectacular depictions that imitate a print on Multicontrast paper made with a grade 5 filter.
You're fortunated to be surrounded by such appealing sceneries.
Have a g'day.
Robert
