1981. Ancient History.
Today I found a box of old b/w photos which I had taken, developed, enlarged and printed in 1981. It seems so long ago. I don't even remember what camera I was using then, probably an Olympus OM10. I have two prints of this shot, one under-exposed on the enlarger, the other too bright. I scanned both and managed to get one of them looking not too bad.

It's a picture of Melbourne's famous (well, famous in Melbourne) Puffing Billy railway, an old narrow gauge line which runs about 25km from Belgrave (in the Dandenong Ranges roughly 40km from Melbourne's centre) to Gembrook. The system is more than 100 years old and was built early last century as an experiment to service the area. Today, it runs as a tourist and holiday attraction every day of the year except Christmas Day, bit with diesel locomotives on days of 'High Fire Danger' when the eucalyptus forest is tinder dry and bushfires are a real danger.

Here, in this rather 'busy' photo, the train is being prepared for the journey, probably from the Belgrave end, but I'm not sure. There is no loop or turntable so the locomotive runs backwards and forwards with the carriages hooked on behind at each terminus by means of a siding. Passengers have already boarded, and if you look closely you can see what I think is a child's face in one of the windows.

Funny, how one can say 'last century' nowadays and it sounds so very long ago.

Hi Andrew

A superb b&w shot of the puffing billy, which I went on as a kid in the 1970's. Now thats really ancient! Good tonal range & a superb pd shot. Tfs!

Hi Andrew

yes, it's funny how the image seems to be very old, maybe for the real old train or the clothes they were..
good capture and I like the composition with the train on the curved line... good B&W and fine details...

well done.

Hello Andrew,

What a find!
Certainly one for the archives.

I like the pov which uses the curve of the train to guide the eyes and yet contain them within the scene. The gaze is brought back to study the people, all so very different with contrasting moods and activities. The 'layed back' man dominates and you use his directional gaze to survey the scene once again.
It's a bit like being on a roundabout!
B&w works so well to help 'age' the shot and demonstrate the range of shades.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Andrew
Indeed time flies and it really looks so long ago especially when we see our faces in the 60's. The compo is just beautiful in b/w the curved perspective great and the contrasts superb
Have a good day

HI Andrew
Very good results with the scanner, the shot does look quite old.
Its funny in a way to see so many looking in different directions. You did a good job with this shot.
I wonder how this would have looked in B&W bordering on the sepia tones?Probably looking even older.
Dot

hello

amazing photo....i like the b&w tone of the composition..tfs

:-)

Nice! I think this is well composed and makes excellent use of the high contrast b&w delivery. The grain really adds to it too - it gives it a timelessness that could date from the 1930s (if not for the bloke with the mullet on the right.)
Good job

Good work Andrew, it is a great record of life in the early eighties.
cheers

Hi Andrew,

A nice souvenir of 1981, the black and white film is allowing us to see the details of the locomotive and of the wagons. The presence of the people has an effect of scale. The subject is well frame. Have a nice day.

Pierre

Hello Andrew
What a great find, it makes you think how we did it in the 'old days'! Bags of detail and atmosphere,
Regards, Leslie

hello Andrew

Good to see you on TL.

This kind of photo cannot be anything else except B&W or sepia. In 1981, a photo like this is a big thing and proud to show it off, especially when you get the contrast and composition done well like this.

In the days of print, however, the viewers were limited to those actually seeing the print with their own eyes, unlike today, you post on website and everybody appreciates it. It will mean even more if you were in the picture :)

tfs, bill

I'm not normally a B & W fan, but I do like this. It is interesting to see the hairstyles & side levers from that era, the clothes do not look much different though!

dear Andrew,
I wonder this photo was taken more and more old time...
1981 is only 28 years ago, but this scene looks 50-100 years ago.
(right long hair man is surely 80's)
anyway, your printing and scaning are very nice to express well the old atmosphere.
(OM-10 is excellent machine, there are users of it even now.
and about me I used Canon AE1)
thank you,
Akihisa
