[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a small jetty off Beach St in Port Melbourne. Taken on a cold wintery night with a SW wind nearly blowing me over. I only managed about 9 shots before I was too cold (fingers too cold to operate camera)!
Anyway, despite windy conditions, I managed to hold the tripod just about steady enough for a 15 second exposure.

Hi Philip,
I like your idea, your composition and POV - I also appreciate the challenge posed by the wind.

Looking at your picture and from reading your note, perhaps I can offer some comments - regarding this particular shot.

1. F/5.6 could be a bit large - because my guess is that you want a large DOF that gives you good focus all round. something as small as F/8 or better still even smaller should help.

2. Trying to steady a tripod with your hand will not really work (especially for 15 seconds!). I know this from experience. The very slightest movement will compromise sharpness - as we see here.
Better to use rigid ballast - or if you can afford it get a very sturdy tripod - or shoot when it is not too windy.

There are many more issues to pay attention to to get the kind of results I imagine you want. The above two are just basics as regards this posting.

The colours are not bad though :-)
Best regards, Daniel

Hi Philip,
Nice composition, I like the different shades of dark blue. It reminds me walking in this harbour 9 yers ago when I was 14. :)
It was also winter time there, but it wasnt so cold. TFS.

Kristof

Dear Philip Jessop!
Very interesting pier.
Nice perspective.
Beautiful lightness.
Good capture.
TFS!

Yo bud - Daniel's comments pretty much nail it. I have the same problem with my girly little tripod, it's always blowing a hurricane when I want to use it. Going to get the big sturdy tripod next buy. You should do the same.

Anyway - you've got the blue hour timed nicely, nice composition too. Just watch the lens flare, unless you're using it for arty effect of course.. Good long exposure to blur the waves too. It's simply the sharpness that needs correcting... Go back now to Port Melbourne!!!

TFS, LOL, cheers
D

Hi Philip
Great presentation and managing climate of this place:)

HI Philip
Your battle with the elements paid off I think. I like this image, particularly the lights and the effect of the lighting at the end of the jetty. Lovely strong colours too. Well done

Sue
