A view of Melbourne from the 'Melbourne 360' observation level of the 'Rialto Tower' - it was a struggle to say the least to get this because the terrace has a high fence so had the tripod carefully up to full height with the legs bunched close together. Also a freezing cold howling gale was blowing so the longest useful exposure I could get was this 4.5 second one - anything longer the camera would shake too much..

RAW - 1/4.5sec at f5, 13mm and ISO100.. Again, I could meter for the sky, the bright light or the shadows - none of them looked good so I've opened up the HDR box of tricks again to get this final result....

Hello, David -
Outstanding result under difficult conditions. The colors and sharpness are excellent, and the wide angle gives a broad view of the energetic cityscape. Very nice work.

Hello David
Superb use of HDR. Considering the circumstances this is incedably sharp, no doubt helped by the lens- and by the low ISO. Very impresive.
Regards, Leslie

Hi David

You're making me homesick! I spent many summers in Melbourne between 1964 & 1982. It's been years since I've been back, though. A marvellous high pov, with astounding sharpness, considering the atrocious weather conditions. Is that a blue heart in the Yarra River? Good lighting contrasts & colour. Tfs!

Hi David,
A sharp presentation with marvellous lighting of this cityscape!
A pleasing composition with many interesting points and plenty room to navigate.
Just a fantastic shot!
I like it!
Well done.

Francis Xavier

Hello David.
Big Applaus for this fenominal picture.!!!
imo, a little less sharpness (due to the sparkling small lights) in it would have done better.
But the stunning colour combination makes it a extra ordinairy picture. Worth al the work and visit, you had to do for.

Great result given the difficult circumstances. Dan

I love the golden lights&colors of this great capture.
I think that a much larger size would be perfect.
I find it a bit too busy for this small scale

thanks,
v

Fantastic cityscape ... whatever you pulled out of your bag o' tricks to achieve it! David, your night shots are so great! Without getting too gushy here:), you are one of the people on this site that really inspires me .. photographically I mean:)
Keep 'em coming!
Trudy

Hi David,
Fantastic aerial picture of the city of Melbourne from Rialto Towers. Now you have brought back my memories, I was at the top of this tower a few times back in 1999 at the age of 14. :) I wish I had been able to take a picture like this one, but actually I had only a disposable camera at that time.
Anyway, city lights are just stunning, great view on the River Yarra and the city. Fine HDR processing as well. TFS:

Kristof

Wow!

Impressive details. You really controled the HDR. And sharpness is incredible (sigma 10-20? I should remember...). Splendid image, excellent POV. Simply marvelous... Great job and TFS.

Alain

Hello David,
I suppose I only will repeat what others already said, but why not?
This IS an impressive night shot. There is, of course, the great light management, but also the lens-distorted composition, that enhances the busy feel of your picture. A city that never sleeps...
I should try this once, but I'm wondering whether I have the appropriate material for this kind of shots. I'm also wondering what is the part of your "HDR box" in the success of this photo. HDR still is a mystery to me. In this case, does it mean that one shot didn't suffice and that you juxtaposed several shots, or did you merely obtain the HDR-effect by postprocessing (work on levels)?
Anyway, the result is great and that's the most important.
TFS & kind regards,
Erik

WOW, love it!

Great pic of Melbourne and the Yarra.

Hey WK,
Nice shot! Good and sharp, despite blowey conditions - have you got yourself a heavier tripod yet? Can just about make out our house, top right corner, the shiny bit! hehe
Showed this to a guy from work who is learning photography, in particular nocturnal photography, very impressed, as he was on the observation deck try to take the same photo a day or two before you and it came out no good. Now he's got a goal to take this shot again as good as this. We might see him on TL soon.
TFS - a little smiley for you!
