Hibiscus Flower

This is one of the first photos I took when I was at Norfolk Island – and it was the first of many of the Hibiscus flowers that I photographed. There were so many different colours and shapes – quite a wonderful display.

And this was after a shower of rain – the first and last shower that we had in the week we were there. I love how the raindrops are sitting on the petals.

For a lot of people, hibiscus is the tropical flower, often associated with Hawaii, Polynesian dancers, surfers, and the like.

In actuality, the tropical hibiscus has about the most complex genetic heritage of any collection of ornamental plants; there is one certainty: like so many other things, the hibiscus flower came to the any place from somewhere else. In fact, any hibiscus flower found in the region was planted by someone, given that the birds and insects of the islands appear not capable of pollinating these flowers, so seed is hardly ever produced without hand pollination.

There are about 200 species of hibiscus known to exist, and each species has its own unique kind of flower. However, all hibiscus flowers share certain features. There may now be over 10,000 named varieties of tropical hibiscus, with six distinct forms of flowers, and more colours and combinations of colours than any individual can effortlessly imagine.

I think this one is just so beautiful, with its attractive orange petals. What do you think?

hello JANICE
as you see I try to put the comments in English whom I cannot speak but with a software about translation, but not always easy because certain words are not similar and when one translates the words are reversed, finally not engraves.
however I congratulate you for this splendid flower on ibiscus, the color is very pretty and quite clear, good details of the pistile. the droplets approval the whole like this black bottom
thank you has you and good day
Edith

Hi Janice,
great capture textures and feel of the petals here :-)
I remember these (as well as a more red-pink version) growing up as a child back in Nigera - they grew around all our neighbourhood. The flower thrives over there due to our very tropical climate.
Seeing it here brings back some very fond memories :-)

Best regards, Daniel
