[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today (22nd May 2005)at 12:15pm, the 400-tonne former fishing vessel Saxon Ranger was purposely sunk off the coast at Safety Bay, Rockingham. It will be used as a dive wreck and will also be a haven for marine life in the area.

I set up my tripod and used a 500mm Reflex lens on the end of my Minolta 7D, waited 3 hours to capture a series of 17 images of the complete sinking of the vessel, which only took less than a minute. The actual fireball you see here, lasted less than a second, so I was very fortunate to capture, but I was prepared.

Photo has been cropped and sharpened a little. Bearing in mind it was around 3+ Kms away, I don't think it turned out too badly. What do you think?

But your waiting paid off ! What an image, unbelievable. I find it interesting that you can see where they put those explosives.

Very impressive documentary shot. Like a professional press photo. Mind you, you have the equipment to take this kind of shot with. Congratulations. I also like the birds flying away to the left. They definitely add to the action.

That's one powerful lens! You caught just the right moment - might be nice the see a couple of the later shots as she goes down. I always find the death of a ship a bit sad.

I was think about a shot of war at first! But i said.. Nevever plaisance boat will stay stupidly near a boat who is on attack :o)
It's impressive view!
PLease... Just tell me you didn't go after, on the boat the play the remaque of Titanic ;o)

Cool! Love exploding things! :) Nice timing and capture. You could probably crop some sky out but besides that I like it. JP

Mate!
Some people have got too much time on their hands! Nice shot. Hope you enjoyed NZ.

Tim.

I always wondered what the quality of the 500mm reflex lens was like, its pretty good, I always wanted to get one when I had Minolta equipment.

Hey, this turned out well Barry. And look at the birds flying in tandem too. That was a bonus I reckon.
Great to catch the explosion and I hope you'll be showing some more of them. Well done.

What a great action shot. Your timing was perfect. I like all the flames from the blast.
Not bad considering you were so far away.

GReat action shot ! IT is very original because it is teh first time that I see a exploding boat before !
great shot !

Awesome capture! The funny thing about this is the birds to the left, they are probably thinking "what the f...?"!! Thanks for taking the time to capture this one.

Wow, look like Pearl Harbor! The sharpness is indeed impressive when we consider the distance but you have a nice camera and objective ;) Your quick reaction pays off here and the bunch of birds on the left adds a nice touch

Well done Barry !
Like a special effect at the movies. Superbly capatured considering the distance. You choose a very good angle.
Bravo!
Robert

Hi Barry,
Superb capture, In the right moment!
good framing and composition.
best regards

Well captured - right place, right time (obviously well planned). At such a distance this is a good shot - sufficient detail, not oversharpened and terrific colour in the fireball.
Thanks for sharing
Mark

Amazing moment of an explosing shot Barry! The shot that cant be miss! looks like I'm like watching a stunt movie here. Are u shot ths on land or on a boat? Good sharing anyway!!!

Hello Barry,
This is a great action shot; I feel like looking at a movie :-) I'm glad to hear that it was sunk in purpose and that it is not an accident ;) You did very good capturing this great moment. The shutter speed you used was much appropriated and this is an excellent composition in a great POV. This is very well done! Thanks,
Claudine

A very unbelievable image!
It seems like a merchant hit by a torpedo in IIMW, if only the boat on the left were in another zone...
a very good work.
