The big fire, 3
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This is the third photo in a series on Canberra’s big fire three years ago. A few months before the event a severe drought had started in Australia. By the summer of 2003 this drought had already been providing plenty of ‘food’ for potential fires in Australia. And they happened by the dozens.
Canberra’s big fire on Saturday, 18 January 2003 started two weeks earlier, far away in the Murrumbidgee Ranges. On that particular day, however, the wind had suddenly picked up. The fire front began to race towards town, covering the final 50 kilometres or so in just a few hours. When it entered people were out shopping or swimming or else napping at home.
In this picture the fire is to the left (i.e. west), some 5 kilometers away. The wind has started to blow the smoke over and above the spot where the three friends are. They are not watching the catastrophy – its all hidden in dark smoke anyway - but turning away and discussing things. You can also see a bit of blue sky to the right, showing the weather that would have been…
Thank you for your visit – and opinion, if you have another moment.
PP: Slightly cropped and framed. Again no further enhancement for documentary reasons. |

Ho Cordelia- this may be the favorite of the series so far, I like the angle and the silouhette of the three friends, it gives the picture a more ominous feel and you can feel the danger from the fire in this shot- Excellent!
Keep up the great work!
Best wishes,
Steve
Hi Cordelia
This out of the three shots is the best. You have captured the human aspect of this event I like this picture a lot.
