From my wanderings through City Park I offer this shot of a small Japanese macaque monkey. Launceston, Tasmania shares sister city status with Ikeda, Japan. The colony of monkeys found in City Park were presented to the people of Launceston by the city of Ikeda. As the notes following will show the monkeys in this enclosure have herpes B.

Launceston did at one stage have a zoo but rising costs forced its closure with all the animals being transferred to Hobart in the state's south.

The macaques (genus Macaca) are Old World monkeys of the subfamily Cercopithecinae.

Aside from humans (genus Homo), the macaques are the most widespread primate genus, ranging from northern Africa to Japan. Twenty-two macaque species are currently recognised, and they include some of the monkeys best known to non-zoologists, such as the Rhesus Macaque (as the Rhesus Monkey), Macaca mulatta, and the Barbary Macaque (as the Barbary Ape), M. sylvanus, a colony of which lives on the Rock of Gibraltar. Although several species lack tails, and their common names therefore refer to them as apes, these are true monkeys, with no greater relationship to the true apes than any other Old World monkeys.

Several species of macaque are used extensively in animal testing.

In the late 1990s it was discovered that nearly all (circa 90%) pet or captive macaques are carriers of the herpes-B virus. This virus is harmless to macaques, but infections of humans, while rare, are potentially fatal.

Reading your notes David, I hope these monkeys aren't running wild in the park? He looks good sitting there, sunning himself and pondering about his life... Nice one,
Janice

Hi Dave,

I can see how John Tulip confused the monkey for me as I have a beard...lol... Still, an excellent photo of the monkey. Razor sharp with warm lighting.

Well done

Hi David, well your note is very informative! Their seem to be several viruses that monkeys transfer to human, like HIV for instance.

Very well photographed, sharp and colourful.

I like the texture on the rock.

Very well done! Yan :)

Great shot here of this wonderful little fella, I find these monkeys amazing to watch as they seem so human like sometimes. They have an amazing manor and can acheive some amazing stuntman acrobatics.
