Taken looking up the South Esk Valley. On the left can be seen another walkway which leads to the bridge shown and branches off and continues along the cliff face to the old Duck Reach powerstation which I have previously shown. The Duck Reach walk is one on my calendar, 5km and some 325 steps along the way.

The walk across the Suspension Bridge gives a stunning feel of the power of the water that flows down the South Esk River, and it is easy to see how it has gouged out the Gorge over tens of thousands of years. The power of water can be seen at its best when the Gorge is in full flood and is so powerful that its force can move huge boulders. The water in the First Basin is a popular swimming place in summer when the water is glassy and calm, but is so deep that not far below the surface the temperature of the water is only just above freezing.

Being only a short stroll from the city centre makes it easily accessible, and is the reason why the people of Launceston and visitors have continually used the location since it was built late last century.

The Alexandra Suspension Bridge forms part of the First Basin-Bridge Walk, one of the many walks available in Launceston's Cataract Gorge. If you are feeling a little adventurous, cross the Gorge on the Alexandra Suspension Bridge, known locally as "the swinging bridge", and with good reason! This masterful piece of 19th Century engineering was opened in 1904. It was washed away by the Great Flood of 1929 but restored a few years later. The bridge was named after Queen Alexandra, consort to King Edward VII.

Good morning David, Launceston is like a mini Nat Park all on its own with a city built round it.Of course it certainly helps to have someone photograph it that can regularly do it justice, lucky for us it has. Another beautiful photo to admire at our leisure. Thank you for your efforts David.
Diane

Good reflections David. The blue water certainly brightens up the scene. Quite strange seeing the different blue of the sky. It's a great place to wander around. TFS

Hi David. A brilliant TL composition. The only manmade item we see is the bridge, a very useful thing to have in this part of the world. Good reflections and clarity. A good part of Tassie for sure. Murray.
