When I first noticed this flower forming I first thought it was some type of rhododendron, once it had developed fully I realised I was looking at something else.

The waratah found in Tasmania (Telopea truncate) has beautiful crimson flowers, which are more delicate than the mainland species.

Waratah (Telopea) is a genus of five species of large shrubs or small trees in the Proteaceae family, native to south-eastern Australia, from New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. They have spirally arranged leaves 10-20 cm long and 2-3 cm broad with entire or serrated margins, and large, dense flower heads 6-15 cm diameter with numerous small red flowers and a basal ring of red bracts. The name waratah comes from the Eora Aboriginal people, the original inhabitants of the Sydney area.

Waratahs are popular, though somewhat tricky to grow, ornamental plants in gardens in Australia; several hybrids and cultivars have been developed, including some with creamy-white and pink flowers as well as the natural red.

Scientific Classification
Kingdom: Plantae
Division: Magnoliophyta
Class: Magnoliopsida
Order: Proteales
Family: Proteaceae
Genus: Telopea

Hi David,
such a wonderful flower - I love to go in Nature to see such beauties - special when there are also insects around ;-)
Thanks for sharing this good shot of this beauty, bye and greetings
Sabine - wishnugaruda

The Tassie flowers are nicer I think because they never get straggly, growing up here they are inclined to look like they grow too fast and even the flowers are less compact. Very nice, thank you David, one more for my flower collection.TFS

Good & rare capture. And a very informative note to go with that. Love the colours...aided by some good work on the lights. Well spotted, composed and captured.

Beautiful visual, I adore this color, and with this visual one, it is simply wonderful. I like his all coiled nucleus, as angel's hair.

Hi David,
Lovely shot of a strange and beautiful plant. Well composed and colourful.
Thanks for sharing.
Michael.

Stunning flower David!

A real eye catcher! So I must be pretty well visited by all kinds of insects too (^_^) . Love your maxim too.

PS. I observed that reds are often difficult to seize in bright sunshine. Despite a good light it ends up a bit blurred compared to other colors at the same DOF which are well focussed. I have no explananation for this.

Cheers!
Robert :) will follow

Lovely capture of an exotic flower, nice colors, very good exposure and composition. Your note very informative.
