[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Pro.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is what it is all about!

The Professional Sports Photographer.

Not for him, faffing about with a semi-decent DSLR and swapping lenses all the time. This is his job, his livelihood - food on the table and Christmas Presents for the kids will depend on his photographic skill. Whether he is freelance or working for some publication, he has to Get The Shot.

I've spoken to a number of serious pro sports-photographers at this and other events and they aim for a success rate of around 5-10%. i.e. for every 100 images they shoot, between 5 and 10 will be saleable. How much they make per image wasn't disclosed!

This is a part of my Melbourne Grand Prix 2007 theme.

Anyway, shot in RAW, converted, cropped, resized, sharpened and frame added.

No doubt indeed, he's a pro! He's got the biggest guns around! Excellent pov! If this like you were shooting like snipers, well, he may have bitten the dust already! Great shot!

Hi Richard,

Great shot. Actually, your point of view it is very interesting around the sport photographers. Several people don't know how important is to get the right shot and in some cases it is necesary to take a hundreds once to ensure that it will be alease one or two good shots.
Great job !
Juan.-

he looks quite well covered in terms of range :) from ultra wide to super tele :P
good catch here richard

not easy to move around with that much gear :)
i think you'll need that 300mm lens soon with all the bird park photo you been shooting lately richard :P

Hello Richard !

Great note and subject !Indeed for us , shooting is just a pleasure. I would not think I could live with my Photoworks myself. Hats Off to those guys , who are certainly enjoying great POV along the tracks But they mist deliver the goods, if they want to keep the priviledge to be there ! Only the best are alllowed there. And many photographers are pushing them , if they fail to perform well.

Tough world....

TFS, Robert

what a truthful note indeed, professionals are so called because its their living. and what a bunch of gear, must be an additional what, 15-20 kilos? =)

If I keep on practicing I will be just like him... maybe not in sport-related but having photography as my ONE job...

and Richard, you did a great job taking a photo of him... I would have done the same thing lol...

Hi Richard,

How are you? Nice shot. I saw lots of pro last week end at Sepang. I only able to shoot 5 pictures that are properly captured. And I share one of those.

Thank your for the hint of capturing moving object that is realy fast.

Cheers,
Tjutjut

Hi Richard. Good capture of this photographer in full action mode. Good clarity and cropped perfectly. TFS. Murray.

Regarding the Note: this should be encouraging for all TL's - a 5 to 10% success rate, with all that equipment - amazing! So don't feel bad if the occasional shot doesn't turn out.....
Interesting capture!
Cheers
Otto

Hi Richard,

Great shot of this sports photographer in action. I love how you've captured him concentrating and shooting whilst loaded up with his heavy gear. This just shows how its not just about pressing a button, and there being much more effort involved in this line of work.

Excellent capture

John

Ah, ah! You have to have a very good neck and shoulder to hold all this stuff at the same time. I have problem keeping my 100-400 zoom with this EOS Canon 20-D with battery pack steady. I would like to do this kind of job someday with many kodaks, OK, but with good monopod and rotating head ;)

This is a great capture, with nice POV and good control on harsh light :) I’m a former maniac of F1 ;)
Claudine

hi richard, wow, this guy has the gear! but i guess when one does it for a living you need it to get the shot! anyways hello from vancouver canada, my family (and i mean everyone) is from glasgow, except me i was born here in BC, so cheers, thanks for your comments on my work, scott

This is really the pro. Man, I cannot imagin having all of those stuff. I really want that big one. Too much for a hobbie. Well presented. Sothy

PS: I am glad that you got to visit SR again. Dont be afraid to eat spider thing. Those are good.

Ah yes the grand prix. I am well on the way to look like that soon. Got the cap, the sunnies and a T-shirt already. The rest is just jam.
Excellent shot Richard, agree with all the other comments, well spotted, brilliant colours, very nicely framed.I saw this the other day but got distracted to comment. Glad I've found it again.
