Overlooking Quality Row in Kingston, Norfolk Island

I have just spent a great week’s holiday on Norfolk Island, an island located in the South Pacific Ocean, east of the Australian mainland. It is actually closer to New Zealand than Australia, and to fly there only takes about 1.30 hours.

Norfolk Island (Norfuk: Norfuk Ailen) is a small inhabited island in the Pacific Ocean located between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia, and along with two neighbouring islands, Phillip and Nepean Islands, forms one of Australia's external territories.

It is located at 29°02′S, 167°57′E. It has an area of 34.6 km² (13.3 mi²), with no large-scale internal bodies of water but 32 km of coastline. TYhe island is roughly 5 x 3 miles in size.

The climate is subtropical and mild, with little seasonal differentiation.

The island is the eroded remnant of a basaltic volcano active around 2.3 to 3 million years ago,
with inland areas now consisting mainly of rolling plains.

The Norfolk Island pine, a symbol of the island pictured in its flag, is a striking evergreen tree native to the island. There are thousands of these trees on the island.

This part of Kingston shows the houses of Quality Row. These were originally built for use by the military officers of the penal settlement when Norfolk Island was a penal colony from 1825-1855.

Hi Janice,
What a lovely place. I can't imaigne that one would have a penal colony here in this beautiful place.

Very scenic POV Janice.
It's well taken - though I find the hanging branch in the top right a bit distracting - but that could just be me :-)

Best regards, Daniel

Hi Janice
Lovely capture. Looks so lush, could be one of our own islands. :-) Great POV and coluring. Hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday.

TFS, Martyn

Hello my friend

This image is really beautiful, I love the varying tones of green and the alternating light and shady areas. The branch accross the top frames it perfectly.

Its nice to see you back. I hope your break in Norfolk Island has give you a little time to catch your breath a little.

TFS kind regards Helen

Hi Janice,

Gorgeous view of this little island, although the pole at the right is a bit disurbing in my opinion even like the branch on the right upper corner. Anyway a superb panarama with wonderful natural colours. The sharpness and contrast are perfect. A very nice posting my dear Janice.
I looked for the Map:view and ended up in the water of the pacific, I think you put the wrong coordinates in the Map:view option they should be: -29.019476 and 167.950770 don't forget the minus cos y'r down under. Further more I think you don't have the correct Google earth selections:

To use the Google Earth (GE) feature is quite easy: First have Google Earth active. Go to the menu and select 'tools' > 'options' > Lat/Lon and select the 'Degrees' box (Not the Degrees, Minutes, Seconds box) > Apply settings.
Now you will see in GE on the bottom line the latitude and longitude figures changing with the movement of the pointer. So put the pointer on the place were the picture was taken, note the figures, and put those figures in the appropriate boxes on the upload or manage/edit menu.

Take care and have a great day.

Hi Janice
Great contrast and DOF but I also find the branch at the top distracting.
I've missed your pictures!
