[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Tamar silt has been in the news again this week after a tourist boat became stuck in the mud and several rowing crews spent 2 hours waiting for a change in the tides so they could row the 2kms back to their clubhouse.

One council spokesman came out and said that the river is tidal of course there will be a silting problem. I have seen in the library pictures of a bustling port filled with large 3 masted sailing vessels, paddle wheelers and steam ships and wondered about the silting problem back then.

Of course there would not be a problem at low tide if Hydro Tasmania released some of the water from the catchment of the Trevallyn Dam.

Another eyesore along the river is this collection of rusting hulks. The boat with the yellow funnel has since left the old King's Wharf and is headed to Fiji, the others are all owned by one businessman who on many occasions has been asked to have them surveyed or moved. His collection is those vessels from the rusty red boat through to the one with the green bow door.

PP Work...colour fade correction 5, adjusted curves and levels, digital camera noise removal (noise 15, blend 70), added border and resized.

Eternity begins and ends with the ocean's tides

Hello David
I'm really blown away how LOW low tide is. what is the major cargo coming in or out? .. I really like the colors collected here (or imprisoned by the tide) the reflections are wonderful.

I agree with you notes they need to release some of that water.. or as I have heard many time here dredge the seabed!

Tricia

Hello David,
Master of Tamar photo. wonderful pov, colors and composition. TFS
John

Another great shot David and as you point out councils never learn. Good grief we all learned about the effects of daming a river that floods when we were at school, if the silt doesnt get washed out with a flood each year it builds up behind the dam for starters and downstream becomes a very poor place with no annual silt to enrich the soil and wash away the silt washed in from the sea. TFS (sorry too for getting cranky about the waterway)

That silt is a BIG problem in rivers and marinas here too. They fix it all and then sit back and wait too long to do more work on it, and then it's too late and the damage is done - AGAIN!!

Another super image Dave - those boats do look funny sitting up there on the mud!! I would crop off the sky above the masts for more effect - but it's still nicely presented.

BTW, Have you noticed how high the tides are over the last few weeks - we've had some good high tides, and also some good swells onto teh beaches too.

It's caused because the Moon's orbit coming closest to the Earth at this time. Quoting: "The Sun, Earth and Moon come into alignment, with the gravitational pull of the Sun and Moon on the Earth at its strongest."

Some useless / useful bit of info for you!

Another great river shot David, I would liked to have seen a closer shot of the boats but you would have lots the reflections of the mast - interesting story
cheers
Jack

Hello David,

Beautiful image, great colors and reflections of the boats. Congratulations!

Sorina

Hi David

WOW! This is a terrific reflection, well captured.

I like your philosophical note. It is a very sad that such beautiful rivers are silting up. I am wondering whether this is the combined result of increased runoff of soil from pastures and valleys due to deforestation (ie. fewer trees to hold onto the soil around their roots) and, from your note, the effects of damming. HOwever...I coulod just be barking up the wrong tree. :-)

It is indeed regretable the silting continues to exist despite the improved awareness and discussion on such environmental matters. A good dredging sounds well overdue for the Tamar.

TFS your impressive photo.

regards,
Martyn

Hi David. A very relaxed looking river harbour well captured. This has a lot of emtional appeal, well away from the hustle of the big ports, where even getting a good vantage can be tricky. TFS. Murray.

PS I like the new intro photo.

Hi David,
To most people those ships are an eyesore, but what an opportunity for a photographer. All that colour and textures.
You have captured the scene brilliantly, I wouldn't change a thing.
Cheers,
Pete.

I wish I had the knowledge to say something terrible informed or helpful here, David, but I don’t so all I can say is my usual heartfelt “awesome”. I just love everything about it, colour detail , reflections and POV. Excellent.
Warm Regards

STunning as usual. If you look at the relfections only it makes a very nice abstract artwork. Interesting that you mention Fiji. I just read an article on Fiji in the travel magazine and it looks magical.

Beautiful capture. Very nice colour reflexes. thanks.

Hi David,
Very nice and beautiful photo,congratulation.
Best regards,

Looks busy, David! For your note: maybe moorage is too cheap around there, so the place becomes a scrap yard of sorts.
Well composed - you made the watery junk yard look good in your picture!
Cheers
