[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the third image in the series, it may not quite have the impact as the others, however, it does highlight nature’s power.
As described in a previous post this region of Victoria is known as the “Shipwreck Coast”, it is estimated that there are 700 shipwrecks along the Victorian coastline. Pictured here is a spot called “Loch Ard Gorge”, its history is of tragedy, when a ship called the “Loch Ard” sank in these waters as it was traveling from England to Melbourne in 1878. A total of 54 occupants took the journey and only two survived, a cabin boy Tom Pearce and a young lady who he helped save Eva Carmichael. They swam into this Gorge and sheltered in caves behind me. In the morning Tom Pearce climbed the cliff face (approx 100 Feet), to raise help.

This image was taken just after some wild weather, the size of the waves were huge, further posts will highlight this better. In this shot, as I look at the incoming wave (or spray), it takes on the appearance of a hand coming out to grab you, to pull you back into the icy waters. I could not imagine what this would have been like back in 1878, being a survivor of a shipwreck.

Hi Peter

Impressive landscape and awesome show of power in these waves. A fascinating place. I also like your note.

I think this compo may have a little too much contrast but nonetheless a great posting.

Martyn

This is a fantastic shot and the story you include is wonderful. I believe that a picture speaks a thousand words, but sometimes a few words a necessary to select which 1000 words it speaks.

Good PP!

Kind regards,
Jim

WOW, the power of the ocean eh?! I was at this gorge about August last year... some big waves then, but NOTHING in comparisan (we JUST managed to get into the cave where Eva and Tom sheltered the night)

Lovely shot.
Thank you for sharing

Hi Pete a nicely timed shot showing the great power of the ocean. i love the way the deep blue sky contrasts with the sombre brown of the cliffs.
