Well, I've got to say that it isn't easy working with the soft edges of a rainbow when you're trying to desaturate the rest of the image.
I lassooed the rainbow, converted to object - increased saturation, then the base image is desaturated, contrast and brightness enhanced. Next, merge all - then spend hours trying to get the edges of the rainbow to look natural.
Have I or haven't I? I know what I think, but I'd need hours to get it right and I've got to go to work..

I think it's a great concept for the theme David.
I like how dramatic the shot is to begin with.
Accenuating the rainbow by desaturating the rest of the image
makes it a very surreal sight.

Yes, the edges could be better, but you aleardy know that.
I think it was a great effort and result.
Well done.

Nice shot and interesting effect. Have you tried the sponge tool to desaturate the edges of the rainbow? Good work though.
Ed

Hi David,

Very neat to isolate the rainbow for the color. Great effect. I'm impressed with your post processing skills! Like you, I can spend hours and hours on the computer with photos. It's almost noon and I haven't had my morning coffee yet! Lisa

2 points for all the work and the result!
Well done!

TFS Greetings Simone

WOW!!! Incredible shot David!! Oustanding work here, and yes, I understand this would take a steady hand to do this perfect, but the effect is really excellent and you can always keep playing with it until perfection is reached! Really nice idea! I'm impressed with the photo!

David,
Perhaps the lasso tool wasn't specific enough.

Try this,

When using Adobe Photoshop CS3:

I duplicate the layer and then turn the duplicate to black and white.
I then add a layer mask. (The front loading washing machine looking thing, third from the left on the bottom of the layer palette.)
Make sure to select the mask and then a use a BLACK paintbrush to paint the objects that you want to be colored. If I make a mistake, I use the WHITE brush to paint the back to Black and White. Usually enlarging the photo makes it easier.

I found that the "painting on a layer mask method" is easier usually easier than selecting the object with a Selection Tool because a lot of times it's difficult to select only the object you want.

Another hint:

When you get towards the outer edges of the rainbow, lower/change the opacity of your brush in steps as you work outward toward the area that you want kept B&W.
Remember, if you make errors it's okay, paint it back with a white brush!

I think the photo itself is nice, I love how the buildings are leaning towards the rainbow!

Scott

Hi David,
This looks good, I like the idea of just the rainbow in colour, the edges could be a little better, maybe using a layer mask would have been easier that using the lasso tool.
Well done
Regards Andy

Hi David,
Yo, this is fabulouse, great contrastful image, stunning cloudscape and the contrast of saturated/desaturated is excellent shown! Great posting David.
Hans

N.B. Good tips from Scott.

good attempt, nice result, could always be better, like the grey borders which look too dark, but finaly the idea is here

jo

Hi David

Interesting effect here.
Not sure you quite pulled it off though, I think that cropping into where the rainbow stops would look better...maybe?

2 points for the time and effort put in though.

Regards
Tracey

Hi David, And what a fantastic job you made of it.Great idea and very well done. TFS.
Regards, Pat.

Hello David,

I can imagine what a pain this was to achieve but the results, after all your hard work, are dramatic!
Scott's ideas seem to be very good.
At the level it is at now, perhaps a little rotation with the smudge tool, close to the rainbow, would have prevented the clouds following the shape of the rainbow.

The funny thing about computers is that there is never just one way to achieve a result!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Now that's a LOT of work. Nice photo in the first place, and good work on the rainbow.
TFS,
Wilt

I think this is a very good picture. I like the dramatic look to this shot. The colors in the rainbow look wonderful and the desaturated image makes it look that much nicer. Very nice creative work.

Kevin

Later :)

Hello David

A really innovative idea here, stunning original image with good lighting and contrast. The desaturaion is superb and I think your hours of work have really paid off. Outstanding work here.

TFS and for joining in the theme

hello David
sorry to be late for your shot.
