Hi Folks,

Taking a break from a break, just to make sure not to miss this week's theme of "Under".

The term Down Under is a colloquialism referring to Australia and occasionally New Zealand. It locates Australia as "the land down under" because it lies totally within the southern hemisphere.

Despite the term's widespread international usage, it has been less commonly or rarely used by Australians themselves. The persistence of the media's use of the term has led to its wider embrace and usage.

The Men at Work song "Down Under" became an instantly recognisable, patriotic rallying song - even though the writer of the song, Colin Hay, is Scottish.

Australia's most famous boxing champion, Kostya Tszyu, was also nicknamed "The Thunder From Down Under".

According to Roger Ebert, "No film set in Australia is allowed to use the word Australia in its title where "Down Under" is an acceptable alternative. For example, we don't get The Rescuers in Australia or Quigley in Australia." (from wikipedia).

About the bridge:

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is a steel arch bridge across Sydney Harbour that carries rail, vehicular and pedestrian traffic between the Sydney central business district (CBD) and the North Shore. The dramatic view of the bridge, the harbour, and the nearby Sydney Opera House is an iconic image of both Sydney and Australia. The bridge is locally nicknamed The Coathanger because of its arch-based design, although this usage is less prevalent than it once was.

The bridge was designed and built by Dorman Long and Co Ltd, Middlesbrough, Teesside and was the city's tallest structure until 1967.

According to Guinness World Records, it is the world's widest long-span bridge and its tallest steel arch bridge, measuring 134 metres (429.6 ft) from top to water level. It is also the fourth-longest spanning-arch bridge in the world. (from wikipedia).

Thanking you in advance for viewing and your kind words.

Hello Agoes,

A truly impressive shot!
A very well chosen viewpoint which leads the eye comfortably across the water from the safety of this imposing structure.
I like how you have managed to include that other very recognisable icon as a diminutive!
Beautifully clear and well composed!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Agoes,
I would assume that any photo from Australia would qualify for this week's theme. And you have yourself a double entry with this shot. Lovely composition, tech details are superb, and what a lovely view of Sydney's main attractions from under the bridge. Regards...Danilo

Hi Agoes,
The Harbou Bridge always brings back my nice memories of Sydney. Thanks for posting this. :)
Its structure is amazing, well captured from an excellent POV. You chose a good angle to present the Opera House as well. Sharp and clear image.

Kristof

Nice work Agoes, two down unders for the price of one. I would have preferred that this composition with the Sydney harbour bridge & the famous Sydney Opera House had been taken with a more detailed f stop say f/16 so that the Opera House would be in more detail. In this instance I guess the main subject & focus was the bridge & you certainly have caught the detail there.
