Blue Seastar (Linckia laevigata)

Bula! Hello in Fijian.

I have just returned from a holiday to Mana Island in the Fiji Islands of the Pacific Ocean. I had a wonderful time away, and the warmth of the island was so good. During winter in New Zealand many people will visit islands in the Pacific where winter is an unknown word. Fiji consists of 300 islands, and are a very popular choice for a holiday destination.

The temperature was over 30-Celsius degrees each day, the sea breezes were so refreshing and the blue waters were so inviting. We swam often and all day long. On one of my swims I came across this Blue Seastar(Linckia laevigata). I found it’s colour was truly stunning, quite a vivid copper-sulfate blue.

E Lokoloko Ningio is the Fijian for this distinctive blue starfish which lives amongst the colourful coral on the reefs around Mana Island.

The Blue Seastar (Linckia laevigata) is a striking coloured species that is bright blue in colouration. It is part of the Ophidiasteridae seastar family. It is a tropical species that can be found through out the waters of the Indo-Pacific and around the northern part of Australia.

I like the simplicity. These blue starfish also occur on the Barrier Reef in Qld. Well done!

Nice composition, so simple with two colours.
Well done.

Nice shot, Janice! Good contrast between the starfish and the sand. I might have cropped a wee bit of the bottom to create a more rectangular format and anchor the starfish more in the left third. Still, an excellent contribution!

Hi I like this one a lot. The simplicity escpecially. The slight patterns on the sand creates a nice texture and the blue against the sandy colour is great. It reminds me of the lovely story of the guy on a beach where 100's of starfish washed out. He was walking up and down throwing the starfish back into the sea. Another guy walking passed him said he must be crazy there are 1000's of starfish he cannot make a difference. He kept on throwing them back and said "I'm making a difference to this one"

The colour is truly stunning. And with sand as the background.....its just what you need. Amazing contrast. This is very creative work Janice.

Very interesting picture of this blue starfish, Janice. Not something I had ever seen. I like the contrast between the blue and the beige of the sand as well as the small ripple on what I assume is water. Well done and welcome back!

Welcome Home Janice..sounds great your fijian holiday..Im off to the East Cape in 3 weeks.. not as tropical... but maybe some nice shots from there...
